If I'm not mistaken, Touma is the only other Level 0 in the main character list, but Imagine Breaker really takes him out of the running to be a normalizing character.

http://myanimelist.net/character/20615/Pierce_Aogami

So, Index has three level zeroes. The problem is that Touma and Tsuchimikado both have excuses and are overall quite powerful despite their lack of esper powers, and the legitimately powerless individual doesn't really get much screen time... at all.

Certainly even with those three, bringing in Saten to explore the life of a powerless individual in a city of supermen was a worthwile venture. I just wish it didn't fall so neatly into the "Females have confidence problems" stereotype thing. When you compare them, Aogami is likely the most confident and happy character in the series. His lack of power doesn't mean much to him. He's more concerned with his various fetishes and adolescent fantasies.. Saten on the other hand seems to define herself by her flaws and weaknesses and has a whole mess of low self esteem from it.

Come to think of it, as a whole the comparison doesn't really reflect well on either gender. The guy doesn't care about his weaknesses at all because he perceives no flaws in himself and is just too busy being horny. The woman sees nothing but her flaws and is only capable of deriving any level of sense of self worth from the praise of those she views as her superiors. Yeah... isn't that just something to think about? Or maybe not. I could be way over analyzing this.

That might not be overanalyzing it after all. Japanese society is very male-oriented after all. It reminds me of the backwards ideas the developers from Team Ico revealed when explaining why they changed the main character from their upcoming game, The Last Guardian, from a girl to a boy. Things like "girls are too weak" or "their skirts would not look okay when going up ladders" really show how close-minded they can be on the actual role and value of women.

i have to second that statement. seriously, while i can understand someone not enjoying a series, the repeated attacks on railgun i see here on MAL make me feel sorry for you guys. right now, it is looking like the last couple of eps of index s2 will be enough to make it barely pull ahead of railgun s1 in my book. but much of this thread (and some other index s2 threads) is making me feel like people think touma fighting magic ice ships and punching lolis is somehow a billion leagues superior to anything in railgun.

i have zero trouble dropping an anime i don't enjoy, even supposed great ones like code geass. i have zero trouble putting anime on hold when if i get bored, like bleach or naruto. it might sound stupidly simple, but people need to start focusing on enjoying what they enjoy instead of hating what they hate. hell, if i find fun in silly stuff like baka test or k-on, i will watch and enjoy. if i don't like them, i walk away.

as far as railgun goes, i enjoyed it quite a bit. yes, saten, uiharu, konori mii, even kongo mitsuko (mugi-chan!) and even *gasp* my girl kuroko. love them ALL. love their side stories. love seeing how kuroko and uiharu got into judgement (which i am sure most of you call "filler" because that word apparently makes up a tenth of your total vocabulary); loved seeing misaka's violin performance (actual filler but i still loved it); loved learning more about academy city and tokiwadai; loved how the level upper arc indirectly showed us that touma really is as cool as we all originally thought, because other low level students felt so much pressure that they would put their health and safety at risk to cheat the system; even got introduced to another kihara, this time telestina (you haters that can't see a series connection here need to try using your 'watching' set eyes and your 'listening' set of ears for a change); hell, even got nice bits of komoe sensei being there for the students after the level upper arc; the list goes on and on.

was railgun s1 perfect? heck no. i think it needed misaka-imouto, last order and accelerator appearances. but to call it the piece of crap that people here are doing, is just wrong.

i hope that if we get a railgun s2, none of you haters watch it. although i highly doubt that will happen. haters gonna hate. and they need their fuel. it's like rage-a-hol, apparently quite addictive.

Lol. Maybe I'm oversimplifying, but it seems to me that if you watched it, it was an overall positive experience. Doesn't mean people don't have complaints, and it certainly doesn't mean people don't have preferences. This is a place people come to voice opinions, and a large part of this is complaints, criticisms, preferences, and yes, even hate.

Obviously it can be aggravating when there's an oversaturation of hate, but I haven't seen too much of that on this board. On a basic level, when someone asks "Index or Railgun" on an Index forum, the response is pretty predictable. I would expect similar reactions in favor of railgun on the Railgun S2 forum.

It's not as if Index S2 has been free of complaints either. If you go through the threads for the first few arcs there was an abundance of complaints about the punching of females. That issue basically got stale, and I suspect the people who were legitimately offended by it left. Almost nobody was pleased by the Ice Ship arc. In point of fact it was done really poorly. Index S2 has had an abundance of flaws, and over the course of the threads they've all been addressed at one point or another.

Quite frankly, as a whole my opinions of Index S2 aren't particularly high. I frequently rewatch S1 (or at least I did before S2 started). There was about half a year there where I was watching it every month. It's a great watch with tons of replay value. I don't think I'll actually watch S2 again once this is done. There just isn't a lot that would draw me back for round 2.

I still watch particular episodes of Railgun from time to time. I like the arc with the level 0 spider thug guy. Can't remember his name, but he loved that brand of milk and talked about breasts in a completely nonsexual way. I love the Level Upper Arc. I really enjoy the last two episodes. The OVA is fantastic. It's not uncommon for me to pull these out of my archives on a slow afternoon. Just a good way to spend some spare time.

Does that mean that I like Railgun more than S2? Maybe. I don't know. Haven't fully formed my stance on that yet. I do know that I prefer Index to Railgun. This being said, I love both, and each gives me more than enough to complain about. I always have complaints. They come naturally to me, whereas it takes a concerted effort for me to decide what about something pleased me, and come up with a compliment more specific than "That was AWESOME!!!"

Regarding which will be announced, at the end of the day, Index S3 and Railgun S2 are gonna happen. Which order they happen in seems like semantics to me. I can rest assured that they both will, and thus my only concern is when. I hope it's not too long a wait. Plus, if they did a Railgun S2 first, that would mean it'll take longer for Index to catch up to the novels. We all know it's gonna slow way the hell down once that happens.

Also, they've finally finished the arc they were on in the manga, so they could do what they did with Railgun S1 where it starts off with Manga Adaptation, but moves on to relatively high quality filler expanding upon the characters and universe. I can certainly come up with reasons why Railgun S2 would be a good move, though Index S3 would also please me greatly.

Agreed, not saying that railgun is bad though. I like it alot. But knowing which one is going to have a more serious story and seeing as how there wont be a to aru series this year cuz JC is doing Shana 3, i want Index 3 to come out next year.

Though i heard that theres a surprise at the end of the season which may explain some theories about the trailer

yes i suppose that's an oversimplification but it's kinda necessary for the sake of keeping our posts a reasonable length. ^_^

i love your posts because you're always happy to point out that grays are not black or white. i've yet to visit the railgun forum and to be honest, it didn't cross my mind that there could be index hate there (personal projection i suppose, as i love index quite a bit), but now that i think about it, it would _not_ be shocking.

my previous post shows that we agree. i still view railgun as the spin-off and i don't see that ever changing. it's just that i find it to be quite a good spin-off! neither shows are perfect but i love them both. afterall, the statement i was backing was "screw yall, railgun is just as good and exciting I welcome more biribiri".

if we get both a railgun s2 and index s3, the order doesn't matter to me either. i'll just happily enjoy another installment of a beloved anime. =)

A good point that is often forgotten (myself being as guilty as anyone in this). In point of fact, there's a very short list of spin-offs I think do as good a job at standing on their own merits, rather than being a classic case of Friends without all the other friends, or Seinfeld without any interesting interactions.

The list reads: Frasier.

That's about it. Good spin-offs are hard to come by, and railgun is certainly one of them.

you just reminded me that i _did_ wonder if railgun would be any good when it first got announced (it was probably the shower scene in the first episode made me forget all that). indeed, spin-offs typically end up being nothing more than sad attempts at growing a franchise.

ahahaha even though cheers wasn't exactly a kids show, it's one of a handful that filled my childhood with laughs! and i loooove frasier! excellent point. off the top of my head i would also add angel (from buffy) to the list. many people actually felt it was better than its parent series. maybe not surprising to non buffy fans, but still almost unheard of success for a spin-off.

another reason i loved railgun is because it made both seasons of index more enjoyable for me. it builds on index s1 lays a little extra foundation for index s2. i can't wait for more seasons (original point of this thread). but first things first: episode 22 coming soon!
