![]() Berserk Manga and Anime Series Berserk is a dark fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Kentaro Miura. Miura premiered a prototype of Berserk in 1988. The first volume of the manga was published on November 26, 1990 by Hakusensha in its Jets Comics collection. Three more volumes were published. In 1992 the production was ended, and Berserk was serialized in Young Animal. The series was adapted into a twenty-five episode anime series, Kenpū Denki Berserk, by Oriental Light and Magic. It debuted in Japan on October 7, 1997, on Nippon Television; the final episode aired on March 31, 1998. It covered the first arc: Golden Age. Two video games were also created for the series: an action adventure for the Dreamcast and another for the PlayStation. Berserk's setting is inspired by medieval Europe. It centers around the life of Guts, an orphaned mercenary warrior, and Griffith, the leader of a mercenary band called the Band of the Hawk. As he ages, Guts changes from a solitary boy into a man who realizes the value of camaraderie. The story contains elements of both fantasy and horror, as it explores both the best and worst of human nature. Both the manga and anime are noted for their heavy violence. Though the manga storyline remains largely intact, many changes were made concerning the modification or elimination of characters, some of the series' most violent and brutal scenes, and material that would have extended the storyline beyond the planned run of the anime series. Themes of friendship and ambition are more developed and emphasized than those of causality and the supernatural in part because of these changes, all of which were made with the approval of the series creator, Kentarō Miura. There has been confirmation of a new Series. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com (2010-09-27) New Berserk Anime Project Launching The TV trailers can be found online. It was announced in Vol.35 that a new Berserk anime project is in the works. |

What I like at this anime (apart from the sci-fi story) is the soundtrack... There are so many good songs in it, carefully selected so that they match with the theme of each episode episode. |

In my case, I found the story more interesting and a lot of things are better explained. Plus there are some cool new characters. |

![]() Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo 巌窟王 Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo is an anime series loosely based on Alexandre Dumas, père's classic French novel, Le Comte de Monte-Cristo. Spanning 24 episodes, it was produced by Gonzo, directed by Mahiro Maeda and broadcast by Animax across its respective networks in Japan, East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, Latin America, and other regions. Gankutsuou's unusual visual style layers Photoshop textures into digital animation, with backgrounds often rendered in 3D. The series features several famous pieces of classical music, including Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony, the Donizetti opera Lucia di Lammermoor, and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. Gankutsuou is set in the far future, during the year 5053, whereas Alexandre Dumas's original novel takes place during the 19th century. Though Gankutsuou incorporates elements of science-fiction and fantasy, it also retains many aesthetics of France in the 19th century, particularly in regard to social classes and wealth. In addition, each of the episodes (of the Japanese dub) began with a summary spoken in French. Geneon Entertainment acquired the North American release rights for Gankutsuou released it under the title Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo.[1] As of September 12, 2006, all six volumes have been released on DVD. A box set was also released as a compilation of the six DVDs. On December 27, 2008, Funimation announced that they had acquired the license and planned to release the series in 2009. This visually and atmospheric drama can be watched through Netflix instant watch and several other anime sites. Sources Here Don’t forget to get your Gankutsuou in the Staple Thread ![]() |

![]() Romanji title: Yojō-Han Shinwa Taikei (四畳半神話大系) English title: The Tatami Galaxy Genres: comedy, drama, psychological, mystery, romance Episodes: 11 @ 23min each MAL Page // wikipedia.org/en Synopsis from ANN: A second year student from the Kyoto University finds himself entrapped amid a plethora of unsatisfying possibilities to change his life. Accompanied by Ozu, his mischievous best friend, and Akashi, a stern engineering student, the nameless protagonist trudges through each path as he tries to grab the opportunity that seems to dangle right in front of his eyes. This series is rife with philosophy and presents a tale that is both memorable and enjoyable. It is told in first person point of view, and the main character is a guy left unnamed and referred to by Watashi (which means self or I injapanese) by viewers. He reminisces on the journey of his college life and the many parallels he travelled. The subs go by so fast that the anime has been known to turn some viewers off. But, anyone intrigued by the brilliant writing will put up with it and eventually get used to it. The speed of the dialogue actually adds to the universe. There is so much symbollism in the anime (which stems from a novel) that it is impossible to explain even a piece of it in this short review. Pinpointing the main message of this series is quite debatable among fans as well. [We all have our theories!]. For example, I think the prominent theme is believing you can shape your fate b stepping outside of your comfort zone intead of letting yourself drift through life and mingiss the best opportunities. A major catalyst character of the series, Akashi (which can symbollize many things, but most notably, possibly akasha or the akashic record- or the buddihist akashi [air of spiritual realm]- the name could have multiple meanings as could all the characters' names/personalities) is a quirky female who is well developed in her place in the story. Other plot catalysts include: Ozu (which could possiby be a nod to Yasujiro Ozu [the late perfectionist director], which would make sense allegorically, as Ozu was known for his social criticism and revolution around themes dealing with adolsecence --- and in this series Ozu usually manipulates situations & other characters), Fortune Teller (who plays an obvious role, at least in the main scheme), and "Master" Higuchi Seitarou, who is "originally introduced as a deity of matrimony in the first episode" (MAL character page: Seitarou Higuchi). Higuchi plays a big role in trying to point Watashi down the right "rosy campus life" path (He could stand for wisdom gained in retrospect since he is Watashi's senior in his last of his 8 yr stay). Watashi must keep repeating his time in school until he gets it right. Why does this happen? You'll have to watch it to find out! The series is definitely not to be missed, if only for the symbollic and genius story. It is also humorous to see this guy stumble through his many paths trying to avoid and change his fate. The art is different and fun to watch too. It is one my (gINGEr) personal favorites (and I can vouch for its worth to anyone who says different! ;). anyway, be sure to collect a Tatami Galaxy member card if you're a fan... ![]() ---just click the card to visit the thread. |

![]() Romanji title: Uchuu Kaizoku Captain Harlock English title: Space Pirate Captain Harlock Genres: Action, Drama, Sci-Fi, Space Episodes: 42 @ 25min each MAL Page // Wikipedia (a bit about the series from wikipedia:) Directed by Rintaro [^_^], the series features a dramatic narrative and a symphonic score performed by the Tokyo Philharmonic. While superficially a space opera the series raises a number of issues from the challenges in the life of men to the limits of violence as an effective solution to problems. For example, while Harlock is sympathetic to the plight of the Mazone—a refugee people fleeing a dying planet—he finds no pleasure in his battles with them. Toei only recently released the show in 2008 as a pay-to-watch-service on IGN's Direct2Drive; but then in 2009, it decided to provide it for free on Crunchyroll to those who are willing to wait a certain number of days, and as part of a subscription to those who want it immediately. Funimation as well as Crunchyroll and Hulu have all the episodes with subtitles streaming on each sites respective Video Portal. Leiji Matsumoto originally created Captain Harlock (sometimes spelled Captain Herlock) in his mangas. From wikipedia: "The character is introduced in Adventures of a Honeybee (1953), but did not make its debut as lead character until 1978's Space Pirate Captain Harlock." Captain Harlock is the most recognizable character from the Leijiverse. There is a reason for this. The series is fantastic for space opera fans. Harlock is a calm & cool, yet strong-willed character. He's a good-hearted pirate. ;D He is the definition of a perfect hero, and this is draw. He always knows what to do! If I was a space pirate :P --I would want to be like Harlock. From wikipedia: "Harlock is the archetypical romantic hero, a space pirate with an individualist philosophy of life. He is as noble as he is taciturn, rebellious, stoically fighting against totalitarian regimes, whether they be earthborn or alien. In his own words, he "fights for no one's sake... only for something deep in [his] heart". He does not fear death, and is sometimes seen wearing clothing with the number 42 on it. In Japanese culture, the number 42 is associated with death (the numbers, pronounced separately as "four two", sound like the words "shi ni" -- meaning "to death")." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Harlock) He watches over a young girl stuck on earth, and this plot is a bit sad. You'll have to watch it if you want to know. And believe me, it's worth it. If you've seen & liked any of Matsumoto's creations, then you've probably already tried Harlock. If you haven't, you can't call yourself a fan yet. Queen Emeraldas & Tochiro also emerge in this series. Two films were made after the start of the series, and 3 sequels were made later. Besides these, Harlock characters and its story surface in many of Matsumoto's later creations. Tochiro, Emeraldas, & different versions of Kei also appear in later works. To really appreciate any of the later stuff, you must start with Harlock! (but skipping Yamamoto stuff isn't so bad. xP) Collect your Special Edition Harlock member card... ![]() (click on the card to go to the request thread) |

![]() Aired: Apr 2, 1997 to Dec 24, 1997 Length: 39 eps @ 23 min. Genres: Drama, Fantasy, Shoujo, Psychological, (strong yuri hinting) Rated: PG-13 (themes are for 16 & up tho) The Revolutionary Girl Utena (aka Shoujo Kakumei Utena) series is highly underrated, at least by the newer generation of anime fans. This may be due to the extremely allegorical, symbolic, and downright crazy nature of the show, or it could be the fact that it has only been remastered & re-released for about a year. Whatever the reason though, it is a unique series that deserves even more than this spotlight. Kunihiko Ikuhara (Sailor Moon [ep director], Mawaru-Peguindrum) created the series thinking it would be his last show ever. So, he tried to make this his best work. Anyone familiar with his work knows that at the very least his stuff is multilayered. If anything I've just written has piqued your interest, then this show is probably for you. Many themes run throughout the series, and in turn many interpretations have been made by different people. Everything in the series stands for something else and you never really know if what you are seeing really happened in the story, or really if any of it at all was supposed to be the reality in the universe. This is a wonderfully deep and postmodernist anime that can get under your skin. The soundtrack is amazing, even if the production is a little dated. The narrative plays around a lot with emotion, sexuality, and gender. Each duel Utena faces represents another piece of the puzzle toward the final stage of maturity, and also another struggle with herself she must overcome in order to liberate herself. Vive la Revolution! There's just one more thing I want to add to this mini-review. If you do watch this series, it is recommended that you read up on it, because it can be quite hard to digest. ... But, it is definitely worth the journey, especially if mental workouts are your thing! A great place to start is its wikipedia page. |

Eleven original video animations and six theatrical movies followed, and the series has been released on VHS, Laserdisc, and DVD in Japan. The series tells the story of Ataru Moroboshi, and the alien Lum, who believes she is Ataru's wife after he accidentally proposes to her. The series makes heavy use of Japanese mythology, culture and puns. An alien race known as the Oni arrive on Earth with the intention of invading the planet. Instead of taking over the planet by force, the Oni give humans a chance to fight for the rights to the planet by competing in a competition. The competition is a variant of the game of tag (literally "the game of the Oni" in Japanese), in which the human player must touch the horns on the head of the Oni player within one week. The computer selected human player is Ataru Moroboshi, a highly lecherous, very unlucky and stupid high school student from the Japanese city of Tomobiki, and the Oni player is Princess Lum, daughter of the leader of the attempted Invasion. It featured a production team led by director Shinichiro Watanabe, character designer Kazuto Nakazawa and mechanical designer Mahiro Maeda. Samurai Champloo was Watanabe's first directorial effort for an anime television series after the critically acclaimed Cowboy Bebop. Jin has a more traditional style but don’t think of this as a weakness because his skills are amazing. The two contrasting samurai warriors are far from friends, yet their separate paths seem to cross anyways. Mugen is wandering aimlessly through the city when he stumbles upon a teahouse where he meets Jin and Fuu (A ditzy waitress, but don‘t think she doesn't have anything hidden up her sleeves). Fuu convinces them both to come with her in search of a mysterious samurai that smells like sunflowers and their journey begins. This modernized hip-hop tale breaks the barriers of the common, historical, samurai anime. |
