Ergo Proxy has a great ammount of references (like any other Sato-san work), to mythology and philosophy in particular. A great ammout of them is pointed out by Shinsen-subs, but I found some more (I'll post every reference I found later, I can't find my DVD with Ergo now ^^'). If you noticed some more, you're free to post it here.
First one: Real Mayer's name. The name is written "Real", no "Re-l" - the way it's displayed on the screen in Dedalus labolatory. If you look closer, you'll see the broken letter "A". Anyway, "Re-l" is paradoxaly Real's real name ;). As the plot develop, you know why - she's "RE-1", the first duplicate of Monad Proxy. Is white Real the "RE-2"? I don't really know.
2. Falling baby carriage in episode 2 - we have the same scene in "The Untouchables", when Cevin Costner lets a carriage with baby in it, starts a gunfire and child's mother falls over, everything in slow motion. Of coure in "ergo" nobody starts to shoot, but the results are simmilar.
3. Falling Vincent - this great scene, when he falls from Romodo head down, mumbling a monologe and the screen shakes, isn't original either. The exact same scene is in "Animatrix - Kid's Story", it's even has the same meaning - the guy is closed in an ideal, but fake world and to set free from it, he needs to do something radical - fell down, giving up his life. But he doesn't die, he "awakens" in the real world.
4.Pino's rabbit costume - Obvious reference to the "Alice in Wonderland", Pino guides Vincent through his journey. She may also be one of the Centzon rabbits (that may mean she's a mirror thet shows Vincent emotions - see Centzon Totochtin on Wikipedia).
5.Futu-risk: The name of episode 4, but also the name of electro-punk band from 80s. The genere fits well, also this word play look awesome ;p.
6.Remember two Proxies fighting each other on two towers? Tolkien?
7. From the same episode - dinner with the Blonde Proxy (who looks and behaves like France from Hetalia). At one point he wants to kiss Vincent's hand to "thank" him for killing his beloved. Despite being somewhat gay, this scene resemble me the part of Homer's "Iliad", when king Agamnemnon secretly comes to the Greek camp to beg Achilles for giving back his son's body.
8. Real kicking Vincent out of the boat - isn't it like Garfielid ang Odie? Real's attitude in this ep is really Garfield-like. Also, we can observe how much Vince and Real are different, just like cat and dog.
9.Nightmare quiz - very popular theme of sci-fi novels and films. The episode makes you feel "wtf", but probably Sato-san is making fun of the genere (like in Samurai Schamploo he's messing up with samurai story).
10. The name of the last episode is ironically "deus ex machina" - it means the plot twist that explains and ends all the threads.
That's it for now, it's all I can remember. I hope you like it and have your own remarks ;) |
