Well they care about each other a lot,i think throughout the series there was more of attraction between them than Ranka and Alto. The scenes that involves them are more romantic and emotional i think. Not to mention they have an attraction physically too XP And they look cuter together. And i think Sheryl motivated Alto more than Ranka. I wished in the end he made a desicion >.<

Attraction in interaction.

When they interacted, people reacted and were attracted. Well it pretty much summed up how I saw it. They also had depth in their relationship while still having that crackling chemistry that makes Arusheri so interesting and wonderful.

How comfortable and natural they are around each other is a big factor in how much I like them together. Both of them keep up apperences in their day to day lives, Sheyrl because of how she grew up, Alto because of his self esteem and masculinity issues, but when they are together the gloves and masks come off and they are able to be there for each other and support each other (The moment Sheyrl offered to take Alto down to that zentradii planet so he could "see the sky" made me think "Man this love triangle BS is so over now. GAME OVER RANKA :p).

Really, they are both very similer individuals who need someone who sees them for them, which is why I never bought Alto and Ranka together outside of friends, simply because she sees him in an idealized light that isn't how he really is (Impulsive, irresponsible, and just a little bit dim) whereas Sheyrl sees him for how he is and like that about him. Not to mention Alto goes out of his way to do things he normally wouldn't do because of Sheyrl's impact on him, even though he doesn't initially realize it.

You know I tend to notice that Alto always puts up a "nice guy" image for Ranka (I evidently see this rooted in episode 3 where he guilts up when he sees her cry for snapping at her in the bunker - then learning about her sorry past), it's like how an older brother treats his sister, whereas with Sheryl, he is more open, he gets mad when he's mad - false smiles be damn, and he is not afraid to speak his mind around her. He and Sheryl just have a lot of depth when they're together.

Alto is one of my favorite characters -- and if you think he's a shallow and a prick of a character to just up and leave Sheryl (after all they shared) for a last-minute hook-up with Ranka is laughable for me. Seriously, it is. 8'D

My Literature teacher (who watched MacF) said it best,
"You saw how everything happened - you know what happened - so many unspoken promises bring a new beginning for two characters who at first, couldn't care less about each other -- but with an earring and a promise, their lives never became the same. (...Now, where's your homework?)" XD

Alto is very awesome indeed, one of my favorite male protagonists to come out in a good while. The only problem is that the staff of Frontier (or rather, Kawamori) try and paint this image of Alto which, quite frankly, doesn't exist because what they say is totally different from how the show actually turned out, so it's totally moot, even though I usually put more stock in what the creators have to say, but they change their stories so much in regards to the process of the show that I just don't give a shit anymore and what we saw is what we saw :p.

As with you, I totally don't buy that Alto is a shallow prick or indecisive, particularly because it was shown many times in the series that once Alto puts his mind to something or a cause, he sticks to it loyally...like a dog :p. Anything that even remotely looked like he couldn't make up his mind about things is partly due to his slight dimness and poor social skills anyway, as he is only aware of things when they are spelled out for him. But given how much his character grew because of Sheryl, and how, frankly, he spent the most time with her out of any other character in the series and put his life on the line for her and left his comfort zone many times because of her, that the very idea of him ending up with Ranka at the end when there was no development towards that, is absolutely impossible :p.

Let's not forget that most of the time he used Ranka as a crutch to not actually deal with his problems and to give him a short term ego boost by protecting her so that he could feel masculine (Not trying to paint him as an asshole, especially when I said I like him a lot, but that was pretty much what he was doing), it wasn't a very healthy relationship for either of them, even though I do think Alto cares about Ranka, just not in any particularly deep way.

geez! i totaLLy agree with you! i think he cares for ranka not because of love.. unlike with sheryl.. 'cause if he reaLLy is., when ranka left to go to the vajra world to help aimo., then after that., he shouldnt just be acting okay right? i mean he would stiLL atleast wonders or thinks about ranka., but they didnt show that.
and on sheryL part., eps. 24., when she said that theyre going to end the pretending., its like there's something hat he would want to say right? but sheryl interrupted him. i think he wants to say., that its not pretending but it reaLLy is love~
kyaaaa! :)
lovethe scene when sheryL cried and alto hugged her., and say that he wiLL stay with her..
(at first i thought it was out of pity., but i realized its not., 'cause he had time before he speak right? i mean he stopped first right?so there., it means he really thought of what to say., he didnt just blurted it out.. )
-- aHh..and when he was out to saved ranka., then something happened to macross where sheryl is., he went back right? w/ no hesitation! geez! *bLushes
and i think., ranka knows that they(sheryl and alto) are both inlove with each other..

-- so there., ~~ aLto x sheryL for me..!

I'm trying to get a hold of the novels myself. My friend is very interested in them as well (well mostly volume 3) and I promised her as soon as I get them I shall scan them and send her the link to the file. Now I hope that this is included in the 2nd movie and we can have our Alto X Sheryl true ending.
