Character Name: Yoko Littner
Gender: Female
Age: 21
Series: Gurren Lagann

Physical Description: Yoko is about 5'4" with a healthy, slender build that she is not afraid to let show. Her cleavage is very well-developed, and it is the physical attribute that most will notice about her first. After that, her next most noticeable attribute is her bright red hair, which reaches past her rump at full length. It is usually kept in a high ponytail held with elastics and hair sticks. Her eyes are fairly large and on the golden side of hazel.

Personality: Considering that she was prone to being hot-headed and stubborn as a teenager, Yoko has cooled down a lot in the years since the fall of Teppelin. This isn't to say that she doesn't get fired up or angry anymore, but it does take more of a good reason to provoke her to those emotions than it used to. Having spent several years living in the countryside and on quiet islands, Yoko has learned to appreciate more of the little things about life that she didn't have as much time to consider during the war against the Beastmen. In particular, she learned to fully embrace her motherly/sisterly side. This was due in part to it being easier for her to care about people in a familial (rather than romantic) way after the death of Kamina. She cares a great deal about the upbringing of the current generation of children, and teaches with kindness, practicality, words of wisdom, and a healthy dose of mischief.

Other things about her haven't changed as much over the years. She still gets a kick from a good bout of action, be it in sport or in battle. She has not let up in practising her marksmanship over the years, and is still quite the gun fanatic (as shown by the hidden wall of artillery she keeps in her cabin near the school). When in battle, Yoko will go into one of two modes: 1) cheeky and confident, or 2) deadly serious and precise. The former tends to appear during less dangerous situations, while the latter appears in more serious battles such as those against the Beastmen Generals or the Anti-Spirals.

Yoko has always been one of the more practical and down-to-earth members of Team Dai-Gurren, even during the days when she was more prone to angry outbursts. She likes for there to be plans made before attempting most dangerous missions, and she tends to instinctively know when it's best to retreat or keep fighting. She also tends to see through obvious bull when she hears it (e.g.: Rossiu's favouritism in calling her to board Arc-Gurren).

Her experiences in both the Beastmen and Anti-Spiral wars have made it somewhat easier for her to deal with the death of loved ones. Of course, it still hurts, and it will always hurt. However, it has become easier for Yoko to push on and not fall into a despair that would disappoint the ones who have left her. She will always remember those who have fallen in her heart, and their memories will fuel her to strive for more in her life and the lives of those still alive around her.

When people close to her are in grave danger, Yoko can easily throw away her more logical side and get very fired-up and reckless. She will do absolutely anything she thinks is necessary to protect those around her from death, rushing head on into the blaze of battle without a thought for herself. This is helped a lot by memories of Kamina and what she thinks he would do in such situations.

Speaking of Kamina: it is unknown if Yoko could ever truly love anyone else after him. Kittan came close, it was implied that while Yoko accepted his feelings, she couldn't bring herself to fully give him hers in return. No one could ever be quite the man that Kamina was in her eyes except for maybe Simon, and she sees Simon as more of a younger brother than anything else, so he's out. Likewise, if she begins to care about people in Hell's Gate, she is more likely to care as a friend or sister rather than as a lover; it would take one hell of a man to make the kind of impression Kamina made on her heart.

Lastly, she truly seems to believe that skimpy clothing aids in maneuverability (and in looking badass); it has nothing to do with sex appeal. She still gets very flustered if anyone actually sees her naked.

History: Yoko was born the same as all humans had been for generations - in an underground village, never knowing that a surface world even existed. Her village was called Littner, and everyone who lived there spent much of their time either digging expansion tunnels, building simple machines, or avoiding the numerous earthquakes that plagued their everyday existence. Nothing is stated in canon about Yoko's parents or other blood relatives; it is assumed that any relatives she may have had were taken either by an earthquake or by a Gunmen attack.

And what, you may ask, are Gunmen? Nobody in Littner knew until one day, when a gigantic robot with an equally gigantic face crashed through the roof of their village. With no more earth above their heads, the people of Littner had no choice but to survive in the newly revealed surface world, complete with Gunmen (the robots), hostile Beastmen (the animal-like Gunmen pilots), and a whole new array of plants and wildlife to sustain themselves on.

The people of Littner, including Yoko, were forced to learn the art of war at an extremely quick rate. With the help of the more talented mechanics in the village (including a friend of Yoko's, Leeron), they soon developed arms capable of at least holding back small Gunmen assaults, including surprisingly sophisticated uranium-based plasma guns based on the technology that had lit their village underground.

Yoko proved to be a natural talent with this new arms technology from a young age. After a few years of fighting Gunmen, hunting for food, and practising on her own, she became known as the most adept shot in Littner and was almost always involved in important Gunmen battles. Her favoured weapon was a powerful rifle taller than she was, which could fire either plasma projectiles or wooden arrows depending on the mode it was set to.

At the age of 14, Yoko became involved in what was to become known as a momentous Gunmen battle. It began with a routine chase, in which her objective was to shoot the circuits that would immobilize a hostile Gunmen. In the course of the chase, however, the Gunmen happened to crash through a thin patch of ground and into the neighbouring underground village of Jeeha. Yoko swung down into the pit with rifle blazing, landing in front of two young men - Simon and Kamina - and telling them to get back.

Surprisingly, neither of the two moved back at all. In fact, the older one, Kamina, even tried to talk to her and comment on her body while she was trying to fire off more shots. She yelled at him, asking if he wanted to die or not. Suddenly, the Gunmen struck out at Yoko and Kamina. Thankfully, however, Simon was on hand with his drill and dug them a quick hole to shield them from the attack.

Simon quickly directed them down a connecting tunnel that he had dug earlier. Eventually, she was lead to something that Simon had apparently found: a miniature Gunmen. There was some confusion, but soon the trio all managed to get into the mini-Gunmen's cockpit and launch their way back up to where the larger Gunmen was. After a heated fight, they managed to defeat their enemy and launch out of Jeeha village for good.

After the escape and the next fight following it, she, Simon and Kamina took the mini-Gunmen (which Kamina had named Lagann) back with them to Littner, where Kamina formed an impromptu group called Team Gurren. At first, it seemed a silly but harmless gesture. To everyone's surprise, including Yoko's, however, one of Team Gurren's first accomplishments was the successful hijacking of an enemy Gunmen (which Kamina ended up also naming Gurren). No one had believed that anyone but Beastmen could pilot Gunmen; Kamina's idea had opened up a whole new world of possibilities for the people of Littner.

Of these new possibilities, one of them was the discovery of a homing beacon in Gurren's computer systems pointing them in the direction of the Beastmen headquarters. With this knowledge in hand, Simon, Kamina, Yoko and Leeron set off on a mission to find the home of the Beastmen and defeat them.

Team Gurren went through many, many weeks of adventuring. There were perilous fights, dangerous new enemies (including a Beastman named Viral), stunning victories, good times, and many new friends along the way. As expected, Kamina's idea of stealing Gunmen caught on, and eventually, a great number of the humans possessed their own personal Gunmen. All the while, Yoko solidly supported Kamina and Simon as they fought using their own Gunmen (which they learned to combine early on into one large robot, Gurren Lagann). It didn't take long for Yoko to get very close to both of the young Jeeha men; she saw Simon as something of a little brother, and Kamina... Well, she wasn't sure she wanted to admit it at first, but she gradually ended up seeing him as more than a friend. He was handsome, brave, full of spirit, and even his craziest ideas always seemed to work out spectacularly in the end. Even if he was a bit blunt and rash at times, Yoko couldn't help but like him. A lot.

Eventually, on the night before an important battle for Team Gurren (soon re-named Team Dai-Gurren), Yoko managed to give Kamina a kiss. He accepted her in an embrace, and they continued to kiss in the moonlight. She had never felt more perfect in her short life thus far. After the kiss, Kamina grinned and promised to return it to her ten times over when he came back.

Unfortunately, he did not make good on that promise. In the battle that followed, the humans triumphed over the Beastmen again, but at a great cost. One of the Beastmen Generals, Thymilph, managed to impale Kamina mortally. He was able to fight on a little while longer and help Simon and everyone else win the fight, but after that, his eyes closed for good. The members of Team Dai-Gurren were inconsolable for quite a while, Yoko and Simon especially.

The war against the Beastmen slogged on as it had to despite this. During the battle, they had taken over a massive Gunmen fortress (which Yoko insisted they name Dai-Gurren), and this made the going a little less dangerous, but no less difficult. Yoko managed to keep pushing herself forward for the sake of Kamina's memory. She forced herself to eat large amounts of food in order to keep up her strength, and upped the amount of target practice she did between battles. She also grew increasingly fed up with Simon, who now didn't seem to care about anything but fighting and did nothing but mope when he wasn't inside Gurren Lagann.

Their world was shaken up again very soon by the arrival of a new girl, Nia, whom Simon had discovered sleeping in a box in a ravine. It turned out that Nia, despite being a human girl, was the daughter of Lord Genome, the Spiral King, and she was able to use her leverage as princess in order to temporarily stop an attack by another of the Beastmen Generals. She became particularly interested in Simon as she spent time with Team Dai-Gurren. Despite a bit of a rough start with Nia (caused by an argument about Kamina), and despite the fact that she seemed to outshine Yoko in everything during a short beach break that Team Dai-Gurren took, Yoko did eventually warm up to her (mainly thanks to Nia showing incredible confidence in Yoko's sharp-shooting abilities). It was mainly thanks to Nia's encouragement that Simon was able to finally come out of his slump stronger than ever, too. Soon, everyone was pushing on with as much enthusiasm and determination as they had had before. Kamina would have been proud.

After several more months of harrowing battles and significant upgrades to their fortress and Gunmen, Team Dai-Gurren eventually arrived at the Beastmen capital of Teppelin. To everyone's surprise, it was revealed over the course of the ensuing battle that the massive structure of Teppelin was itself a Gunmen. Housed within the very top of Teppelin's head was Lord Genome, and he wasn't going to let anyone get through his defences without some serious effort. At first it seemed that Team Dai-Gurren had no chance, but with determination and clever maneuvering, the human-controlled Gunmen soon opened a path for the Dai-Gurren fortress to get to where the Spiral King sat.

In the face of Lord Genome, Simon and Nia hesitated to go on, but Yoko encouraged them from the bridge of Dai-Gurren. Everyone had put their lives on the line for Simon to get this far, after all. Unfortunately, she couldn't do much else to aid in the battle after that point, and waited in tense anticipation on the bridge while Simon fought against Lord Genome and his frighteningly powerful personal Gunmen, Lazengan.

It was a long, tough fight, but Simon eventually overcame Lord Genome by driving his core drill straight through the man's chest with incredible power. As he stood with a gaping hole in his chest, ready to die, Lord Genome left them with a cryptic message: "When one million monkeys fill the surface, the moon will become the messenger of hell and destroy the Spiral Star." Despite this foreboding warning, Team Dai-Gurren had more than enough reason to celebrate the downfall of Beastman dominance.

In the years following the fall of Teppelin, human civilization on the surface advanced considerably, centering around the construction of the new Kamina City. Key members of Team Dai-Gurren became the new heads of the government there, including Simon, Rossiu, Kittan and Dayakka. Yoko, however, decided that she wasn't fit for politics and left to seek her path elsewhere.

About six years after Teppelin, Yoko ended up moving to a quiet island and becoming a teacher at an elementary school there. She took up the name Miss Yomako so that the students' vision of her wouldn't be clouded by her reputation as the war hero Yoko Littner. She was truly happy in helping to raise the first generation of children born above the surface rather than underneath it; these children would never have to worry about earthquakes crushing their loved ones, and had far less chance of being attacked by Gunmen (though, there were still some renegade Beastmen roaming the world here and there). She easily won the hearts of the children through many trips and activities taken with them. It didn't hurt that she knew how to throw pieces of chalk into the back wall like darts, either.

One year after becoming a teacher, Yoko saw an urgent news report from Kamina City. It showed Simon and a strangely evil-looking Nia, the latter of which claimed to be the messenger of a race called the Anti-Spirals. Nia announced that because the population of humans (also called Spiral Beings) on the surface had reached one million, it was the Anti-Spirals' duty to eliminate them. They were apparently planning to do this by causing the moon to fall and crash into the Earth in three weeks' time.

The next day, Yoko and her students watched anxiously as an announcement from Rossiu aired. He told the populace that Simon was to be executed for having endangered the lives of citizens during a battle and for having failed to stop the population from reaching one million. There was also a large-scale evacuation plan getting underway. As many citizens as possible were to be loaded into the massive, newly uncovered Arc-Gurren, and the rest would be evacuated to 36 secure underground shelters.

The residents of the island quickly began preparing for the evacuation. However, the parents of a girl named Maosha soon rushed up to Yoko and told her that their daughter was missing. Following advice from her students, Yoko went to the lighthouse to find her, only to see that two renegade Gunmen had appeared and taken Maosha hostage, demanding all the food on the island in exchange for her. The pair began shooting everywhere, damaging the school, houses, and trees around them.

Yoko quickly ran back to her house, changed into her battle gear, and brought out all of her artillery. She declared to the Gunmen that as a teacher, she had some important lessons to teach them. 1) Do not destroy buildings. BLAM! 2) Do not take children as hostages. SLAM! 3) Do not threaten people with force. KA-BLAM! She easily dispatched the Gunmen with her rifle and her bike, and revealed herself to everyone as Yoko Littner. She happily assured her students afterward, though, that she would always be Miss Yomako to them.

After the fight, Yoko received an urgent message from Rossiu. He told her to get back to Kamina City as fast as possible and board the Arc-Gurren, because she was someone he thought must survive. Yoko was disgusted by this blatant favouritism in Rossiu's politics. She set off for Kamina City all right, but she was planning to spring Simon from prison before doing anything else.

Upon arriving in the city and asking Kittan where to find Simon, she busted into the prison with her rifle and found Simon being confronted by the possessed-looking Nia. Yoko fired off a warning shot, and cheekily told Nia that she had become quite a boring woman. Nia simply teleported away at that, leaving Yoko to free Simon and their old rival, Viral. Upon getting out of the prison, the three of them were greeted by most of the original members of Team Dai-Gurren, their Gunmen restored to them and ready to be launched into space to help Arc-Gurren. Yoko took over Dayakka's Gunmen and blasted off with everyone else.

The battles against the Anti-Spirals in space were just as harrowing and exhilarating as any that Team Dai-Gurren had fought against the Beastmen on Earth. The scale of their firepower and determination seemed to grow exponentially the more they fought. This swell was best represented in the evolution of Gurren Lagann, which first managed to combine itself with the Arc-Gurren, then took control of Lord Genome's moon-sized battleship (renamed the Hypergalactic Dai-Gurren). Upon learning how to find the right co-ordinates and teleport to the Anti-Spirals' home-world, Team Dai-Gurren donned new uniforms and went to the other end of the galaxy in order to recover Nia and defeat the Anti-Spirals once and for all.

What faced them upon arrival was stranger and more deadly than they could ever have imagined. Dear friends were lost to the Anti-Spirals almost right out of the starting gates. The very fabric of time and space was warped to the Anti-Spirals' needs, and the entire Hypergalactic Dai-Gurren was nearly swallowed up forever in a super-dense "sea" of space - the Death Spiral Machine. With Simon's encouragement, however, the team managed to summon up enough spiral energy to start pushing themselves up. The Anti-Spirals attempted to keep them down, and at that point, Yoko and Kittan launched in their Gunmen to deal with them. Yoko was nearly hit by one of the Anti-Spirals' giant stone hands, but thankfully, Kittan rushed in at the last second to save her. As they became surrounded, Kittan asked Yoko to let him meet her students when the fighting was over.

It was soon decided that they would risk it all on plunging into the heart of the Death Spiral Machine and destroying the core that kept it going. It would be highly dangerous, but then, as Leeron said, they had always risked it all on Simon's drill, hadn't they? They had two shots to take out the core. The first failed, and Yoko was about to volunteer to go out in a Gunmen and help reinforce the second missile when Kittan stopped her short, volunteering himself instead. He took her into his arms suddenly and kissed her then. He apologized for his selfishness when he looked into her eyes after that. Yoko could only smile sadly and hug him. He was doing this because he wanted to, and she couldn't stop him. He deserved this moment of closeness before leaving, even if she didn't feel the same way he did.

Kittan succeeded in breaking through the machine's shield and driving Gurren Lagann's drill into the core, his eyes blazing with spiral power as he and his Gunmen vaporized in an explosion. Yoko could only watch in shock while the Death Spiral Machine re-converted itself to spiral energy and allowed their whole ship to transform into the Hypergalactic Gurren Lagann.

The team managed to flush out the enemy flagship and get to Nia's real location, only to find their minds clouded by the sight of a dark figure. Everyone was immediately locked in an illusory, alternate multi-verse within their own minds, supposedly unable to escape so long as they had intelligence and spiral power.

In Yoko's version of the multi-verse, she was a famous bounty hunter, loved the world over through television. She felt loved and fulfilled in almost every way, and yet she could still feel that something was off. Eventually, she saw a televised image of herself being married to Kittan. It was then that she found the will to turn the television off and look up. She saw Kamina holding the television and smiling at her, and she quietly thanked him. Yoko soon saw Simon flying by overhead in the Gurren Lagann and, gripping a core drill of her own, blasted off to join him.

The entire team managed to bust their way out of the multi-verse together through sheer force of will, appearing out of Nia's engagement ring before the Anti-Spirals in drill-shaped pods. With all their spiral power and extreme will to survive gathered together, everyone combined to form a galaxy-sized (at least within the Anti-Spirals' artificial space) mecha - Heaven-Piercing Gurren Lagann.

The Anti-Spirals retaliated by creating a galaxy-sized mecha of their own, and the two came at each other in a battle to end all battles, throwing each other into galaxies and using other galaxies like shurikens. Yoko created for them a gigantic version of her rifle, and pounded against the enemy with it until she noticed a small, spherical object in the distance. Nia confirmed that this was the Anti-Spirals' home-world. Yoko fired on it, only to find it shielded. The Anti-Spirals revealed the truth of their past as former Spiral Beings who had sealed their own evolution, and challenged the humans to have the determination that they had had to put forth for the sake of the universe.

Heaven-Piercing Gurren Lagann took a few more brutal hits, being knocked back through several galaxies. The crew began to lose hope, only to suddenly see Earth in the distance through a distortion in the boundaries of the artificial space. This gave them the confidence they needed to keep pushing. Lord Genome (don't ask; long story) pushed his Lazengan out of Gurren Lagann and launched himself at the Anti-Spirals' mecha in order to stop a massive energy blast. In his last moments, he converted all the energy of the attack into a gigantic drill for Gurren Lagann to use. With this drill able to keep on spinning and spinning even after being destroyed multiple times, they kept attacking the Anti-Spirals, finishing with the Heaven-Piercing Gurren Lagann blasting out the Hypergalactic Gurren Lagann blasting out the Arc-Gurren Lagann blasting out the Gurren Lagann blasting out little Lagann itself for a devastating Lagann Impact attack. The Anti-Spirals' last wish was for the Spiral Beings to protect the universe. Simon answered that of course they would. Who the hell did they think they were?

Team Dai-Gurren arrived back on Earth to thunderous cheers and celebrations. Everyone on Earth had been able to view the fight through the distortion in space. Messages to Earth from around the universe poured in from other worlds populated by Spiral Beings, thanking the humans for freeing them from Anti-Spiral oppression.

Simon and Nia had a wedding ceremony very soon after the arrival, which was well attended. However, Yoko noticed just after the two were pronounced man and wife that Nia was beginning to disappear. Simon said that they knew this would happen; Nia was a virtual being created by the Anti-Spirals, and it was a miracle that she had been able to hold out after their destruction as long she had. Gimmy suggested that they use their spiral power to bring back Nia and all their dead friends, but Yoko reminded him that Simon wasn't God. It wasn't their place to force people back.

Soon, Nia disappeared completely, her ring falling at Yoko's feet. Simon handed over his core drill to Gimmy and left the government in Rossiu's hands. As Simon walked off into the sunset like good heroes do, Yoko threw him his ring with a smile on her face.

Later that day: Hell's Gate.

Powers: When she is in a Gunmen or holding a core drill, Yoko is able to channel her own spiral energy to power a Gunmen and perform various physics-defying feats. She doesn't tend to rely on spiral energy as much as people like Simon, but when the need arises, she can put forth just as much as any other top member of Team Dai-Gurren. She had enough power to contribute significantly to the running of Heaven-Piercing Gurren Lagann, and to create a galaxy-sized rifle for it out of nothing on top of that.

Modified for HG: There isn't much to modify, given that Yoko is strictly human. She wouldn't have access to the advantages of channeled spiral power, but then, that's a given since she wouldn't have a Gunmen or a core drill anyway. Other than that, some of her more over-the-top dodging and feats of strength will be toned down, and that's about it.

Great thread, but two questions (I know they seem a little bit stupid, but I had to ask):

1. I don't the "Hell's Gate" reference. Can someone explain that to me? (I tried a Google search, but I got a variety of results. Therefore, I'm confused)

2. "Crime: Killer:" Does that mean what I think it means? (I hope not)

Great description , but i think that you're wrong about her feelings for Simon.

Wikipedia made it clear: "Due to the events in episode 13 it is also speculated that Yoko may have started to develop feelings for Simon."

But Simon was already in love with that Nia girl , and she gave up on Yoko because of Kamina(we know how much Simon ''loved'' him, he couldn't ''betray'' him).

I doubt Wikipedia is empowered to make anything clear, unless it specifically cites an offical source such as printed materials or creator's themselves in an interview. All official sources I've came across are far from supporting that idea. Speculations are speculations. And even if I were to go into my own thoughts on this subject I'd say that Simon indeed evoke caring feelings in Yoko, but they were never romantic. At least none other feelings were ever displayd on Yoko's side and for the most part she was rather trying to cope with the loss of Kamina than seeking romance. To me it looked more like Kamina's death have put a wall between them in a way...

it would be interesting to know what yoko said at kamina's grave.. if it's her final goodbye or something like that because it happened after the events in episode 13 where she really could have developed feelings for simon, that was also my impression when i watched it
well since we couldn't hear what she was saying and i can't remember any flashback that shows it (what i would have expected :o), it will stay a secret :/
or can somebody read from her lips? :D
