If you have the latest version of GIMP (2.6) this is the tutorial for making .gif images

I'm new at using gimp and I 'm really having problems on how to cut a picture from its background.

for example:

#1. Open Gimp.
#2. Open the picture you want to render.
#3. Open the layers tab, CTRL+L or it should be the first tab already on the tool box.
#4. Right click on the picture's layer.
#5. Click "Add Alpha Channel".
#6. Select the eraser.
#7. Start cutting around the picture.

If you did it correctly, you should see a gray, checkered background where you erase the background. When you save the picture in PNG form, that should be transparent.

@hikaru95;
another way to cut it out is to use the paths tool.
start with steps 1-5 mentioned in the above post
6) select paths tool in your toolbox
7) trace around the object you want to cut out by clicking, or click and dragging to make a curve.
8) once you've finished tracing, goto "select" -> "from path"
9) you'll see your object is selected, and now "select" -> "invert"
10) now that the background is selected, hit the "delete" key
11) save as ".png"

This method is harder but better quality
Here's a vid to show it better:

I've got a question. I know how to make a thin border around the image, and I know how to remove the corners (rounding them). However, I don't know how to make the border follow the rounded corners?

Please, help? :D

Okay. For a reg border:
Select - Round Corners -> Select - Invert -> Erase Corners -> Select - Border -> Paint of fill border.

@louisenicole99; There are many different kinds of avatars, which do you want? A gif like yours?

Sure, so for a .gif first you need:
  • A video
  • A video downloading software if you want to pull it off youtube
  • A video dubbing software
  • A video to Jpeg Converter
  • Gimp

I recommend dvdvideosoft, it's free and does everything you need.

After you've downloaded the video use your video dub to cut the video into the scene you want.
Then use the Video to jpeg converter to convert your newly cut video into many jpeg frames.
Open Gimp -> File -> Open as layers and open the folder where the jpegs are located ( for dvdvideosoft it's usually: User -> Documents -> Dvdfreestudio -> Freevideotojpegconverter -> video name

Highlight all jpegs and click open. Once it's done loading go to: Filters -> Animation -> Playback, to test out your gif before saving. Save as .gif

I feel slightly awkward for asking this... but I am still a noob with Gimp, but I arleady know how to use the border, crop, and a few other things in gimp. The problem I am having and wish that I could learn is the victorian style writing.

Does anyone know how I can do that or how to get it (if it is a feature)?

I think the most easy way is to find font in victorian style :) Then install them on your computer in correct folder and then gimp should find them.

Okay. I finally got around to doing as you said SuouAoi, problem is I am not sure on which file to save the font to.. or if the site (fonttemple) is safe. It says it is but I have that trust issue with certain download sites.

If you're using Windows, go to disk C, then to folder called Windows and find "Font" :) There is a place you must install font.
Or just download font, open it and there should be "install" on the top :)

I always download from this sites and they're okay, I promise ^^

You mean scanlines. It's a pattern.
You can Google the tutorials or available pattern downloads.
