What's so captivating and unique about this show is the use of 3D art style (I assume it's CGI). Normally it's frowned upon in anime, but it makes this show so spectacular honestly. I held out hope during the mid-season that it would come back, but it's as if they wanted to use whatever trick possible to avoid doing it.
Do you all think it's lore-accurate or just cutting corners?

End of the day, I get the studio is doing the best they can. It's just such a waste, I feel, to not show all the characters in 3D.

I don’t think they’re cutting any corners. The animation quality all around is pretty top tier. Especially this last episode with dragon boy. I’m kinda surprised to see you say that you thought there were budget restraints. That episode was insane lol

maybe they wanted to show more of Xs powers, like the paper thing. And to show how quickly he could end it. The CGI was probably him just making the fights cooler

@ArthurBedlam Yeah no, that episode was really great otherwise. I just expected more 3D, especially when X was involved.

If using less 3D animation is a deliberate decision, I'm very disappointed. Since we don't have any confirmation yet, I choose to believe it's a budget/planning issue or something else.

So let's put the arcs in to prospective and you'll understand better I feel why 3D was not used for a good portion. Lin Ling/Nice (eps 1-4) were set up for S2 and a SOLO arc, but heavily involved X in retrospect (after EPS 20-22); Yang Chen/Old E-Soul (eps 5-7) were backstory, motivation establishment, and a SOLO arc, but heavily involved X in retrospect (after EPS 20-22); Lucky Cyan (eps 7-10), Queen (eps 11-12), Loli (eps 13-14), Ghostblade (eps 15-16), Little Johnny (eps 17-19), and Hero Tower/Ruins Incident (Ep 20) are all one big connected arc that has almost nothing to do with X; Dragonboy (eps 21-22) is the op of X, why would they turn him 3D if Dragonboy is meant to be seen as the enemy and not worth the effort after pissing X off (ep 22😭); A-hu (ep 23) has a unique comic 2d style, since X made him to a certain extent setting his arc different than the previous 6; X (ep 24) is going back to 3D is what they said ahead of time. They really thought everything out tbh

I read a post from a Chinese person, I think it was either on Twitter or reddit, who stated that the Chinese audience apparently is very harsh on 2D animation for Chinese-made shows. The most popular animated shows in China tend to be 3D. Supposedly even Lord of Mysteries pales in comparison to them, though it still does well because of its well established fanbase from the novels. He suggested that it's possible they primarily did 3D at first to avoid any significant backlash from the Chinese audience before slowly transitioning more to 2D.
