Episode 1 Monica mastered the art of casting magic without an incantation, which became a necessity for her because she's shy and wants to remain anonymous when she casts a spell. She became stuff of legend as she's one of the Seven Sages. She has been living a quiet and isolated life with her cute black cat Nero. But her right to remain silent is about to be put to the test as she has caught the attention of Louis and Ryn. And now, she's being entrusted with a secret mission that she can't refuse unless she wants to do away with her secretive lifestyle, which is to protect the second prince seeing that she can do so in undercover fashion. Isabelle seems like somebody who could upend her, but she's actually polite. A promising start this show is off to as the light novel this show is adapted from is pretty good, and while Gokumi's track record is pretty spotty, being backed by Aniplex gives it a huge boost. |

Well, shit. I was kinda hoping this would suck because my queue is already looking like it's gonna be full - but unfortunately, I love every single character so far. The animation was good when it mattered and I even laughed twice. Bit of an infodump beginning, but not too bad. My only worry is that I generally get tired fast of characters with social anxiety, but Monocle Sage really helped lighten my irritation with Monica's stammering. I'll give it some more episodes - I confess I really want to see Hairdrills wholeheartedly throwing herself into the Villianess role while being a sweetie behind the scenes in an actual social setting. Could be a lot of fun. |

Very nice art. This was surprisingly good. See I like this type of overpowered character better, they know they are but just don't like all the attention and try to keep a low profile, for whatever reason, in her case being shy. I like the wife doctor, maybe she can get her to eat better. I just hope the plot with the prince doesn't suck. Oh just noticed Cygames, enough said this should be great. |

Episode 2 Monica begins school going under the name of Monica Norton, a distant relative of Isabelle's, and of course she would be scrambling. But she did make a friend in Lana, who helped her out with her hairstyle, as well as the student council member seeing that the guy she is assigned to guard is the president. While searching for Felix, she ends up getting caught in a trap designed to take down guys who are trying to assassinate Felix like Aaron is trying to do. So it turns out that Monica's shyness came from a traumatic childhood in which her parents were killed, and since then she had been living a reclusive life. But now, she's being trusted with an important mission, and it just so happens that Nero can take on human form. Monica trying to hide is pretty amusing there going to show that she's a fish out of water in a place like this, but the student council is there to help her out, though it remains to be seen to what extent they understand why she's in this school. |

The first ep was alright, but this one didn't do much for me. Everyone is so boringly pretty. runec said: Not during winter or a hot summer. She can probably use magic to fix that, but for someone who couldn't it would be pretty miserable.Isn't the attic room actually kinda nice? |

Especially since attics are almost never included in the HVAC duct system and insulation is not placed against the roof but over the ceiling of the floor below. So even if you have a separate means of cooling and heating the space it's going take a lot of extra effort. Also, most attics are designed with vents to keep air circulating which makes them by design drafty. This is why converting an attic into a proper living space can be shockingly expensive and might even require purchasing a new HVAC system to handle the additional square footage. |

Can confirm. My home office is a dormer room over the garage and even with the ceiling insulated it gets sweltering during the summer. Like being in a car in the sun. I finally splurged on solar panels and a split-unit heat pump which is a godsend as long as it works. |

Why is Monica so freaking adorbs?! >.< At this point, she'd secure my 'Most adorable/cutest' vote for this Summer way too early in the season. So far so fun this show. I really like that Monica's dynamic with Louis remains even just through her imagination xD Louis is what Hibari was to Himari in Can a Boy-Girl Friendship Survive?, who was also a huge reason for me enjoying that show despite a few screentime. |

Is it just me or are the text translations either missing or oddly placed? And the end cards haven't had a translation of the next episode's title. For now Monica's crushing shyness is sitting just on the right side of cute. But only barely. Not sure I can handle twelve episodes of her stuttering through every line. |

@zkeleton Just seems to me they're trying to cram things into the dialogue area of the subtitles that are usually placed near the Japanese text. For example, the name card of every new character this episode. They shoehorned it in-between dialogue while the character was talking rather than place it below with the card as they usually do. Just very odd. Almost Amazon-like where they use the basic subtitle used for the hearing-impaired to place the translations. And it's not as if CR can't put the text elsewhere onscreen. Watched Food Court and Darling 2 and every scene with text messages the translation was partially imposed over the Japanese. |

Funimaiton used to have to cram the translated text in with the dialogue too. Made it difficult to follow sometimes. Maybe this show is AI translated? |

A lot of shows are giving the human's name now. This one had a human name. Proves nothing of course. It might have been assisted but a human fixed these up. |

Episode 3 Monica looks for the real accomplice, and it became obvious that it was Aaron's fiance, Selma. She dropped the sign and the flower pot, and Monica uses her expertise in physics and deductive reasoning to find out that it was obvious it was Selma, from the dirty gloves to the upside down flower pot used to gain height. So while this assassination plot could have been punishable by death, Selma and Aaron agreed to leave school to brush everything under the rug. After that, Monica is appointed to be Aaron's replacement as treasurer with Cyril mentoring him. While it's not exactly something Monica wanted, it does make it easier to keep a close watch on Felix. In the meantime, there's might be another mystery Monica will need to solve as one of the teachers is up to something suspicious. Monica has what it takes to be a detective seeing that criminals act with the utmost secrecy, and with that mindset she can see things in a way others can't. |

Selma's story obviously didn't make sense. I'm sure the prince knows that they were being controlled. Seems he would have been questioning them instead of sending them off. |

I'm always leery when a story starts centering itself around a big mystery. Too many times being burnt when the answer didn't live up to the hype. Though honestly I doubt I'll get invested enough to care. Monica's shyness and the coyness with her backstory are starting to rub me the wrong way. Plus the socially awkward super genius detective is so old with too many examples of it being done exceptionally well that this just can't compare. |

Monica's stammering wasn't quite so bad in this one but it's still annoying AF. I'm hoping they continue to reduce it. Not enough Hairdrills in this ep IMO, but at least she got a good (if brief) performance in. I do kind of like the show but yeesh, the OP and ED both sound like a Japanese folk singer who can't really sing (too often the case with folk singers worldwide, IMO.) They're on my SKIP button list. |

Never had a timid and/or introverted personality of an Anime character worked on me as well as Monica's-- They really did a great job with it. It doesn't come off as the usual irritatingly cowardly kind or forced cuteness; It really comes off naturally from her. I was just thinking where the princess- who's supposed to pretend to bully Monica- was, and then she suddenly showed up, putting up an Oscar-winning performance xD I guess the 'red eye pupil' thing they keep putting on close up is an implication that people are being controlled by some kind of spell? |

Episode 4 Ryn comes in with a message that Louis is about to become a father with Rosalie now pregnant. Cyril's mana goes out of control, and things would have ended badly for him if not for Monica saving the day with her power as the Seven Sages. While Aaron was the one blamed for embezzling the funds from the student council budget, the mastermind behind this operation is actually the student council advisor Thornlee. It's a great thing that Monica is quite observant and saw the pattern of falsification that is traced back to the start of Thornlee's tenure as the advisor five years ago. Thornlee covered up his crimes by using mind manipulation magic, but such a spell doesn't work on one of the Seven Sages. The student council has quite a lot of work ahead of them as their reputation is in the toilet after Thornless was exposed. It's no wonder why he asked Monica to take over his job as he wanted to go on paternity leave and saw that Monica is capable of doing something not even he could ever thing about doing. |

I admit I enjoyed that episode. A better balance of her shyness and power. I wish they let her go a bit more off the chain when she gets onto a subject she loves and forgets her shyness instead of shutting her down after a few seconds. I wonder if the embezzling will come up later as part of the larger plot? Or was this arc just to establish she's as capable a detective as she is a mage? |

There's basically one short incident that happened in this episode but for some reason, it still felt very entertaining-- I was surprised when it ended. Monica's adorability alone can really carry the show <3 Won't be surprised if Louis ends up being a secondary main boss that Monica has to deal with, but just in a friendly anti-hero way. He seems to be plotting something questionable that Monica wouldn't agree with-- At least that's the vibe I'm getting. |

An aspect to the worldbuilding I enjoy is that magic is basically math. The incantations are mathematical formulas expressed as sound. |

Episode 5 And here's an episode that feels like a filler of sorts as Monica spends a day off in Craeme, only for a dragon to attack and Monica ends up having to assist the new transfer student in Glenn to defeat it. While thinking about her elective courses, the school gets a new teacher in Macragan, and this geezer has some history with Monica apparently, and Monica gets herself into a stressful situation when she is asked to have her mana assessed by a machine, but Glenn ends up breaking it to let her off the hook. Monica plays chess with Elliott, and while she performs a good game, the castling move ends up throwing a curveball in her game plan. And then Elliott and Monica go out to meet up with some traders, but with Monica's sharp eyes, she notices that these guys are frauds and startles a horse to knock those guys down, but then the horse becomes a bigger problem, until Casey arrives to save the day. Pretty much, this episode introduces some more characters and not much happens in regard to Monica's mission. |

Next episode title Honestly this is tricky, it's like a sentence fragment I don't have enough context for. It's literally bachigai na ippai. Bachigai means something is 'out of place'. Na is a descriptor it's an 'out of place' ippai. But the ippai here usually means a single glass of a drink. Like if you invite someone have a drink with you. Or you are literally talking about a single drink. Maybe something like 'an out of place toast' maybe? Ippai can also mean that something is 'full to the brim' or very crowded, etc. But I'm not seeing how you could describe that meaning with an adjective bachigai. According to the dictionary ippai can also be a counter for a boat or a squid. |

If she's supposed to be guarding the prince she should have found out what classes he was in and taken at least one of those. Did she really need to close her eyes just to get into the wagon seat? And that wasn't a check-mate after the guy castled. |

The opening had me wondering if I'd skipped an episode. Did I miss something? Why was she in the tower? Where did the Earth dragon come from? zkeleton said: Did she really need to close her eyes just to get into the wagon seat? I think it was meant as a surprise for Monica that seeing the horses from atop the wagon at sunset would be pretty or that she could better imagine riding a horse from that position, but they seem to have left out the build up. Maybe if they skipped one of the "Moni-Moni-Moni" scenes they could have included it. =P zkeleton said: And that wasn't a check-mate after the guy castled. I took it as her realizing than in "x" number of moves she'd be in checkmate with no way to prevent it. Which honestly means she has a really deep understanding of the game since it's not easy even for the best players to know (or admit) they can't win. I wonder if the way the board was laid out it really was a losing position. While I play for fun I don't know nearly enough to tell. |

One of them, moving her king, put her in a position where it would be mate in four or five moves. If she had made the other move though, blocking with her bishop, she would have lost her queen and it would have put her in a tough position, but there were still enough ways it could play out from there that I'm pretty sure the outcome wasn't certain. Though, I admit, there could have been some kind of highly complex, mate in twelve moves kind of scenario, that I'm nowhere good enough to spot.I took it as her realizing than in "x" number of moves she'd be in checkmate with no way to prevent it. I simply appreciated that Elliot - although he wasn't able to resist the win - realized that castling (when he's never told her that's an option) was a dick move and he was beating himself up about it. Looks like Glen's going to be an OP fire mage once he gets his aim on. |
