At first, I thought she was a yandere, and had been comparing her with Satou from Happy Sugar Life for a while, but the more Nana's true personality unfolded, the harder I found it to describe her.

I wouldn't really put here under a certain dere type. She does have a twisted mindset, being dedicated to her mission and having no problems killing those who are deemed a threat, however she does have a more sweet, caring side to her that comes out under certain circumstances.

Go read the manga if you wonder what she's truly like. But if you want a short version without spoilers then: She actually isn't evil, her intent isn't plesure of killing or revenge, she is a victim of childhood trauma and brainwashing into believing killing talented is right thing to do that will save innocent lives like her family was. Otherwise if she would be evil or psycho or hatefull why would she pray for the dead? Why would she need a phone with a kill counts? Why would she start questioning if a certain individiual good or bad?

Why would she need a phone with a kill counts?

The satisfaction of the kill - "I've stopped you killing x many people, so nyah !"

Why would she start questioning if a certain individiual good or bad?

Pyschopaths also question things as well. The important thing is she didn't stop. Unless she doesn't full control over her actions, then the whole "brainwashing" malrky is a bit incongruent.

Otherwise if she would be evil or psycho or hatefull why would she pray for the dead?

If she wasn't evil, she wouldn't be killing them in the first place. Besides, it's a common practise. Wouldn't necessarily mean much to her.

Pretty sweet kind to me, dep down that is, but a psychopath initially, no yandere in there, and from the manga onwards I was right.

Well, Nana was a smart and badass, but when she knows the truth, she's changed because of her friend. And the reason of her killing intent personality was, she was being manipulated by her superior and all of that she is nice

starts off as clearly sociopathic but there is a human behind the trauma and the manipulative exterior. she's definitely not a yandere, her actual feelings towards other humans is normal, yes even her initial views on the talented.
"I like young-girl sexual creations, Lolicon is just one hobby of my many hobbies," he says.
I ask what his wife, standing nearby, thinks of his "hobby".
"She probably thinks no problem," he replies. "Because she loves young boys sexually interacting with each other."

Unlikable in one word. Got to say, she reminds me of what "Koko hekmatyar" once said:
"I hate soldiers who turn off their brains and blindly obey orders". While Nana is very smart she is overconfidant and reckless at times, doesn't question whether her superior is lying or telling the truth. Even after spending time with the other students, she just follows the order given and stops thinking about it any deeper.

Can't say I didn't want to see her fail. But with the title of the anime being what it is, I guess it can't be helped.

She has sadistic tendencies, but not as a true sadist. However, she is totally unredeemable, and even later on in the manga, she's quite dislikable.

@Strykeryno Her kills are also premeditated, on her own cognisance and with malice. Being a victim of trauma and brainwashing (of which the latter is highly subjective anyway) is no excuse - Patty Hurst tried that in the 1970's and it didn't exactly work out well for her. Nana could have stopped at any time and continued anyway.

In essence, Nana is responsible for her crimes—they're willful and malicious within her warped worldview—but the brainwashing explains why that worldview exists - it doesn't exonerate her.

As mentioned previously she is also self-serving and self-righteous:

Early on, she enjoys the intellectual thrill of outsmarting her classmates and maintaining her “perfect student” facade—there’s a quiet arrogance in how flawlessly she manipulates everyone.

When doubts emerge (especially after Michiru’s kindness), she delays or spares certain targets not purely out of empathy, but because killing them would cause her emotional discomfort or risk exposing her.

After Michiru’s death triggers her breakdown, her “redemption” conveniently aligns with survival: confessing to Kyouya and allies keeps her alive and gives her a new purpose, rather than turning herself in or accepting punishment.

In current arcs, she takes a leadership/protector role among survivors—actions framed as atonement, but also placing her at the center of the resistance, preserving her relevance and agency instead of stepping aside for the people she harmed.

She may pray for the dead, but she also taunts the dying and promises antidotes when she knows there aren't any.

n short: her ideology gives her a noble-sounding excuse, but underneath, she consistently prioritises her own emotional comfort, intellectual superiority, and continued existence over genuine accountability. Many fans argue these traits never fully disappear—her later “heroic” phase just redirects the same self-righteousness and self-interest toward a new cause. That’s why the redemption arc feels hollow or infuriating to so many: she remains, at her core, someone who believes her judgment is superior and her survival is non-negotiable.

A thoroughly nasty character - hopefully she'll meet an end that she gave others
