The End of days
Description: There are three common classes of “infected“;
The top class is the Deceivers, these are the ones that have been hit by the "mother" parasites (which makes viruses [ E and C viruses ] as a side effect and make “sub” parasites as its breeding mechanism) and for all purposes look and act ( when around us) like a human, but they have a drive to pursue there own agenda for power, which commonly means using humans. the Deceivers are the only ones that can come out in daylight without any penalties and they are the most rare; they also have an elevated intellect and have surprising ingenuity.
The next class is "Vanguard". These creatures are fully mobile and can physically and mentally match a human without the help of a Deceiver. The Vanguard are sensitive to sunlight and are perhaps even physically harmed by UV radiation, but they can manage in twilight or under heavy cloud cover. Even at night, though, they rarely act without support, and commonly lead a small army of Legionnaire for backup. Vanguard are born when a Deceiver directly infects the blood of a victim, usually with a bite. The attack places a less powerful version of the Deceiver parasite into the victim's blood, which is often called the "half symbiote" or the "subparasite" or just "sub". The sub-parasite gives the Vanguard some of the mutagenic powers of the Deceivers and much of the hardiness of a Legionnaire without reducing its original human capabilities. However, if a Vanguard attempts to mutagenically shape shift, it is very difficult, if even possible, for the Vanguard to resume its original form without the help of the Deceiver parasite that spawned it. A Vanguard's somewhat flawed mutagenic capabilities can influence other infected as well. However, a Legionnaire mutated by a Vanguard is usually unstable and dies shortly afterward, whereas a Deceiver could easily create a more permanent mutation. The possible changes a Vanguard can manage are also limited, doing very little besides enhancing a few of the Legionnaire’s original characteristics, such as making it faster or stronger. More extreme changes to a Legionnaire, such as growing an extra limb, or rearranging its anatomy to allow it to spit caustic globs, are close to unheard of from Vanguard, but possible.
Vanguards have been known to develop into a Deceiver through one of two methods:
1. The Vanguard must seek out a Deceiver, other then one that spawned it, and that Deceiver must provide the Vanguard with the biomass and, more importantly, the genetic material to transform the sub-parasite into a full-fledged symbiote
2. A Vanguard can eventually evolve on its own after aging for a considerably long time and consuming a large amount of biomass
The last class of zombie is known as a "Legionnaire" These are your typical "zombies" that do very little besides walk around fairly slowly and attempt to devour enough biomass to power their shambling, inefficient bodies. They are often used like shields or foot soldiers for more powerful infected beings. They are made from one of two tiny compounds that we have named the "E virus" and the "C virus." They are the most zombie like of all of the infected creatures, and are essentially dead. The virus is not nearly as capable of intelligence as its parasitic brethren. The Hugher functioning parts of the brain are either devoured as biomass fuel or atrophy and die. The sated virus, which is not genetically capable of melding with higher brain functions, melds with the motor control and instinct parts of the brain and controls it by generating an electrical signal. Because the virus is so low functioning and controls the host so indirectly, the host has extremely poor reflexes and is slow to act. The essentially dead host no longer has proper bodily functions, but rather simply consumes biomass which is directly taken apart by the virus instead of going through a proper digestive system. For some reason, the parasites are sensitive to ultraviolet radiation, and the underdeveloped "virus" stage is even worse. Bright light creates a sensory overload which prevents the Legionnaire from being able to comprehend its surroundings, and exposure to ultraviolet radiation will kill the virus outright. As a result, even when protected from the light by the body of its host, direct sunlight will stun a Legionnaire and then kill it outright in less than an hour. Other sources of bright light that do not emit quantifiable radiation will drive a Legionnaire into the "fight-or-flight" response, since even the low functioning brain of the Legionnaire is capable of understanding that if it cannot regain its senses, it will die.
Most non-human life forms are ordinarily immune to the effects of the viruses and parasites, with the exception of the Deceiver parasite, which can mutagenically alter the plant or animal to be a suitable host for a virus, or occasionally even a sub-parasite. This same mutagenic ability is what gives the Deceiver the ability to transform its underlings into more powerful creatures.
Background information:
"Z-day", the day of the outbreak, is marked somewhere in the 22nd century. Some degree of laser technology and similar devices have become available for scientific and military use. A host of survivors who came across such a facility would be fortunate indeed.
The original parasite is rumored to be an aquatic parasite predominately from the Amazon River that can survive in the human urethra, which, for some reason it mutated very dramatically into a blood parasite. Eventually, it mutated into the first Deceiver. Whether this theory is credible or not has yet to be seen.
Survival Guide
The method to kill an infected creature varies between specimens, but in general, Deceivers can only be killed if both the brain and heart are destroyed (the brain can command cells spawned by the original parasite to reconstruct the host body, and the heart prevents these cells from arriving where they are needed.) Vanguards are much easier to kill, as they are still alive enough to require working organs, but not powerful enough to regenerate damage to those organs as fast as a Deceiver. Brain damage is particularly effective and a solid shot to the head is usually sufficient to incapacitate or kill a Vanguard. Legionnaires do not require any of their internal organs besides the brain and heart and thusly can survive otherwise lethal wounds, but they will die after humanly lethal amounts of brain damage, heart damage, or blood loss.
Infected creatures (other than Legionnaires) are still alive and can be returned to normal if they are attended to soon enough. Vanguards can be returned to normal if they are placed on heavy anti-parasitics and anti-virals soon after the initial infection and will usually have minimal psychological alterations at worst. Deceivers are so integrated with their parasites that there are less then a handful of cases where there was any form or recovery, but if the body and mind are still fighting off the parasite there is usually still time to generate a recovery. The subject should be incapacitated and put in intensive care for at least a month, and even then it may be necessary to take anti-parasitics and anti-virals indefinitely to ensure there is no relapse.
The E virus is an airborne version of the virus which is not very dangerous normally, but a subject which is especially physically or mentally weak (an ability score permanently drops below normal human levels) will become infected even without an open wound, as will an individual with a compromised immune system, unless the subject is given a steady stream of anti-virals. the C virus is the blood borne virus which is present in all infected which can be spread through contact with infected blood, especially blood-to-blood contact. If the patient is not immediately ( within 24 hours of infection) treated with a large dose of anti-virals, he will turn into a Legionnaire. In either case, the subject will generally become a Legionnaire and its bloodstream will be filled with the C virus. |
