Jan-puu isn't human. Jan-puu isn't an alien. Just what is Jan-puu then...? She's pure, unbridled, sugar-infused technology, that's what! Jan-puu is the personification of the artificial intelligence encoded into Hitoshi's starship. Seems the vessel itself felt even worse about crashing into Hazumu than its pilot did, and she simply drove him crazy insisting that she be allowed to come along on the observation mission to the Osaragi residence. A whiny computer is a terrible thing to try to argue with, so Hitoshi called upon his vast reserves of technology and fashioned a remote 'body' for the vessel's A.I. to inhabit, using the only human he had any decent input on at the time (Hazumu) as the template, and thus Jan-puu was born! Naturally, Hitoshi did his best to give her some vestige of uniqueness, but given the template he worked off of, Jan-puu essentially looks exactly like Hazumu, just with a different hairstyle and eye coloring.

Jan-puu is bubbly, exuberant, and excited pretty much all the time, and she's happy to constantly declare her love for Hazumu, her 'Onee-nii-sama', over and over again. On a Japanese cultural note, 'Onee-sama' is a respectful way to say 'Big Sister', while Onii-sama' refers to 'Big Brother'. 'Onee-nii-sama' really isn't a word, but in Hazumu's unique case, it seems accurate all the same. Jan-puu is also more than happy to talk about Hazumu's breasts...hips...thighs...the fact that she slips into bed with her every single night after Hazumu goes to sleep...the fact that she gropes Hazumu's chest while she herself is sleeping...oh my...! Apparently this is Jan-puu's first brush with affection, and she's hooked, gender not withstanding! During the night, she spends her time trying to hug or grope Hazumu, and during the day, she contents herself hovering invisibly by Hitoshi's side, putting the only human that can see her most of the time--Hazumu--into various embarrassing conversations and interactions with apparent thin air. It's not until halfway through the story arc that Jan-puu's existence is even brought to the attention to the rest of the cast--Hazumu and Hitoshi cover for her by the latter forcing the former into agreeing with the statement that Jan-puu is Hitoshi's daughter. Definitely not something Namiko-sensei wanted to hear, but it's a good excuse all the same!

Jan-puu is, of course, sweet and a little naive...but in truth, though she may be extremely gregarious, she's still a creature born in fact. She knows what she is and though it tends to torment her at times, she never has the heartfelt conversation with Hazumu that would elevate the status of their relationship (for her at least) from 'crush' to 'love'. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that she's so high on life. She's never been a humanoid, able to react with others on this sort of level, and as such, she has a whole new perspective to explore life from. Jan-puu has her heartbreaking moments, but all in all, nothing tends to get her down. She's just too excited to simply be allowed to exist at all in the first place...awwww...
