I find the stories that are purely romance to be too formulaic, so I'm looking for something that while have a major focus on romance also focus on other things too. Bonus points if it has a pure historical (no fantasy) or contemporary setting. If you are going to recommend manga then it should be with at least couple volumes available in English and please do not recommend something that is already on my lists. Yaoi/Yuri is fine as long as it's plot heavy (1 sex scene per volume, not per chapter)

Things like:
Basara
Joou no Hana
FMA:B (with a bit more emphasis on a RoyxRiza type of romance and that kind of MCs)

Not looking for things like:
Akatsuki no Yona
Toradora
Sukitte Ii na yo.
Kimi ni Todoke

DO:
Protagonists with personality
Rocky start of the relationship (may start as enemies but not necessary)
Forbidden love due to social status or something similar
MC torn between duty and love
Overcoming obstacles together as a couple
Responsible/Serious MC
Adult or young adult MC
Drama
Court Intrigue and Politics
Self-sufficient/capable female MC that stays like that all the way through the story
The couple ends up together in the end (very important)

DON'T:
Incest
Huge age gap (10-20 years apart)
Love triangles/polygons/harems
Sudden love rival appear (not even if it's handled the way it's handled in Kimi ni Todoke)
Misunderstandings due to lack of communication when the relationship is already established (it's ok if the misunderstanding is about something else than their love life)
Irresponsible/immature MC
Stupid/Ditsy MC
MC with mental problems an generally fucked up personalities.
Severe sexual (or other) abuse
Very insecure MC (mild insecurities here and there are ok)
Comedy
Damsel in distress scenarios
Tragedy

Thanks!

Looking for more suggestions, thanks!

voll
I'm looking for something that is longer than just one-shots, but Joou no Hana, is perfect! More like this, please.

Hidden_Joker
Thanks, fixed it.
Kimi no Iru Machi doesn't seem all that appealing especially since it seems to be pointing to an eventual love triangle and well "clumsy freeloading city girl" isn't my cup of tea.

I remember picking Kono S wo, Mi yo!: Cupid no Itazura? at some point, too many random girls are trowing themselves at MC (even if they have a "legitimate" reason). I wouldn't mind something like Sakuranbo Syndrome: Cupid no Itazura II, though, I like that sort of MCs, they have their charm and the bossy female MC doesn't become a typical tsundere, which is always a plus.

bergil
From the review Haru yo Koi seems to be about the main character and his various relationships, I'm looking for something that centers more on one couple.

What is left is drama, drama can have some comedic moments and some tragic moments. What I don't want is Romantic Comedies and anything that is well a pure Comedy or pure Romance, or pure Tragedy.

Tragedies are usually accompanied by angst, and after reading couple of those I came to a conclusion that authors who write angsty tragedies enjoy torturing their protagonists a little too much and a little too pointlessly. Things like MC doing stupid things over and over again to prolong the angst and if one angsty situation is over there is no time to relax because there is another one aproaching are not my cup of tea. I also don't look for stories that have an unhappy ending, ie situations where after all that angst and torture MCs can't be together after all, or even worse - die. I don't want to read about Romeo and Juliet played straight. I want something balanced, something that doesn't have the obvious "tragedy" and "comedy" tag and where the MCs get to live their happy-ever-after after all the trials they encounter and where those troubles are not because they fail to talk to each other but something greater than them. For instance Basara is something like what I'm looking for while Sukitte Ii na yo. is not.

I've always associated Rose of Versailles with tragedy/unfulfilled love, am I mistaken?

eneru95
Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun It's on my manga list and it's a romantic comedy (not a bad one, but still)

Well, Rose of Versailles is a tragedy, it deals with Marie Antoinette and we all know how the French revolution ended, and has unfulfilled love, with the main characters being unable to be together for several reasons even if they manage to somewhat get together in the end. It's not and angsty tragedy, but it's a tragedy in the end and, now that I understand more what you want, it's obvious you won't like it, especially the end.

I still recommend it, though, since it fulfills all of your Do's.

Did you by any chance suggested Sweet, because I mentioned Sakuranbo Syndrome: Cupid no Itazura II? They are not alike, if anything Sweet is more like Aku no Hana. I think I'm going to add a "no mentally disturbed MC" rule, just to be on the safe side.
Tasogare Otome x Amnesia is on my list

I did not found Fate/Zero to be all that exciting, I doubt Fate Stay Night will work for me, but thanks

Still looking for more, since it seems that I only got one match so far. Thanks!

I know you said you want one couple. It's exactly what you are looking for each eps.

Chouyaku Hyakuninisshu: Uta Koi.

Also you can try...
The princess and the pilot
Kare kano (they are a younger couple in high school but they overcome many obstacles together.)

Erm...I've watched Uta Koi, underneath all the jokes most of the stories are tragedies.

After reading a review about The Princess and the Pilot that said:

It seems that it's not what I'm looking for atm.

Karekano is a Romantic Comedy.

Haha, I though this would be much easier.....

It'd be if you weren't too picky. Especailly the no comedy condition eliminates like ninety percent of recs.

Instead of reading wherever you are reading these stories i would hope you would actually watch them and get an idea for yourself what they are about.

First of all kare kano has some comedy to it, but it's exactly what you are looking for. She is strong, smart, and amazing, and he is the same. They overcome their relationship issues together and best of all they grow together but their personalities don't have some weird change half way through.

Second for princess and the pilot

Comedies usually lead to Romantic Comedies, Romantic Comedies usually lead to School Setting, School Romances are repetitive and more often than not are about things that I hate about romances: Boring love triangles that always are resolved in the same way, the female antagonist is always a bitch, the female MC is insecure and never takes lead, nothing is ever her fault, the guy is either control freak or prince charming, MCs often are unable to have a simple conversation that would typically solve everything, because if they do there will be no point continue the story etc.

Bottom line what I look for is (I'm going to repeat): something balanced, something that doesn't have the obvious "tragedy" and "comedy" tag and where the MCs get to live their happy-ever-after after all the trials they encounter and where those troubles are not because they fail to talk to each other but something greater than them. Happy ending is a must

It doesn't need to be romance per se: Basara and Joou no Hana are not all about romance they have other things that go for them.

These are probably the best recs you will ever get. Comedy is balanced per se so if you are just going to shoot them down just by looking at genres forget about finding what you want

Maison Ikkoku- closest to what you are looking for
Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora
Orange Yane no Chiisana Ie
Ai Yori Aoshi- this one might be a bit far fetched

The only thing that you described that kare kano has is that it's romance it has the occasional comedy and that it is in a school setting. There is no love triangle. It is them focusing on their education together, because they are both the smartest. You are assuming something. Just because something is a romance doesn't mean it's going to be the same thing. No ones going to be able to meet your needs because you will find something wrong with any anime someone rec's.

Actually, "Maison Ikkoku" might be good from the look of it, especially if it's a mixture of funny and sad, as it says. Does anyone dies in "Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora"? That's a general a thing that I'm avoiding, because it affects me too much, otherwise it looks good. Ai Yori Aoshi reminded me a bit of Ah! My Goddess! (I really dislike that one).

It's not that I don't want to read something lighthearted in general, but I'm more in mood for something more serious right now and I really don't want things like the typical Romantic Comedy and school settings.

:o I'm surprised you haven't come across Cheese in the Trap yet. It's an ongoing josei manhwa webcomic that almost has everything you're looking for—minus the forbidden love, court intrigue/politics and the MC being torn between duty/love. But yea, it has all the other points in your 'do' list.

Hmmm... I'm not too sure about "generally fucked up personalities", because the male MC might or might not have one. That one is up to the reader's interpretation. In fact, a large part of the story revolves around that question—is Jung Yoo a frighteningly intelligent vengeful psychopath or is it all in Sul's head and he's merely a misunderstood and kindhearted Samaritan? ^-^

But I have to say the two MCs' relationship is one of the most intriguing dynamics I've ever had the pleasure to witness because the history between them is quite mysterious to say the least. Also, it does have comedy but not the kind that bashes you over the head so you can rest easy on that account (it's somewhat self-deprecating on the MC's part most of the time).

Also, don't be fooled by CitT's image on mal. It's not a love triangle.

@Smud
It's because I typically avoid webcomics, but this "Cheese in the Trap" looks very interesting, especially the paranoid/not paranoid aspect. I'm not particularly against well written psychopaths, the "generally fucked up personalities" was because "SWWEEET" was suggested (which I read but forgot to put in the list) and I don't look for a setting similar to Aku no Hana or a setting with a glorified abusive relationship.

Btw, these recs don't need to be primary romance, something like FMA with a tiny bit more romance of Roy x Riza kind would fit perfectly too.
