Akage no Anne (Anne of Green Gables). It's from the 70's, though. I'm not sure if you want something that "old", but it's great stuff.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san, the characters are kinda based on H. P. Lovecraft's novels
seconding Gankutsuou its loosely based on The Count of Monte Cristo
OZ is loosely based on L.F. Baum's novel
Hakkenden is based on a classical Japanese novel called Nanso Satomi Hakkenden.
there is also an anime called Romeo x Juliet you might wanna check that out.

and my final recommendation would be Zetsuen no Tempest, as you might have guessed its also (loosely) based on one off Shakespeare plays and its called The tempest, its a great anime, and as a bonus they quote Shakespeares works quite often in it, im sure that youll like it.
