I'm basically looking for a series that will keep surprising me until the end. I don't want to effortlessly guess what will happen next chapter when I'm reading. Don't get me wrong, I'm not asking for a story that goes nowhere, each arc should have a direction, a purpose, but if possible I want to be able to understand the whole thing only when the story comes to a conclusion. So the author should have it planned right from the beginning.

Monster, Pandora Hearts and 20thCB are great examples but it doesn't have to be a mystery-themed-fast-paced thriller full of suspense. I'm just tired of generic characters that act exactly as in dozens of series I have already watched/read and appalling twists that make cheap tricks out to be brilliant ideas (who said Code Geass). I want something new. That's all.

Any genre is fine, it can even be a slice of life or a romance-themed series though I doubt it will fit as a main theme (there are always exceptions, like H2).

Animes are fine too but I'm more into mangas.

I don't know much because i'm only at the third chapter, but you should give Psyren a try, i only hear good things about it.

Neon Genesis Evangelion and Bakemonogatari seem like they're going certain places plotwise and then something comes along and throws them off course constantly, if that's what you're looking for. Not to mention they're two of my most favorite anime.

I second Baccano (anime)
Maybe FMA? kind of unpredictable (manga and anime)
Jyu Oh Sei- will keep you guessing (anime)
Ghost Hunt- it's mysteries with characters that have their own mysteries as well (manga NOT anime)
Deadman Wonderland- lots of things to keep you guessing, unanswered questions with twists and turns (manga)
Black Butler- manga and first season of the anime, definitely kept me guessing.
Chaos;Head- anime, it was definitely a mind f***

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. Please keep them coming if you have good ones in mind.

Sundome : already tried it a long time ago, didn't really get into it but I will try it again if someone seconds you or if you briefly explain why it is good.
Oyasumi Punpun : definitely going to read it. Thanks for reminding me.

Aku no Hana : will start with this one since it has been seconded.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica : not really into magical girls but I heard it was great.
Mawaru Penguindrum : seems really promising !

Durarara!! : looks good.
Baccano! : looks good.
Shinsekai Yori : looks fine.

Psyren : Yeah I tried it out some time ago but as in almost every shounen manga I read, it wasn't really what I was looking for (mainstream and generic stuff). Will try again if someone can briefly explain what makes it unique compared to other shounen mangas.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes : looks fine. And long. Going to watch it someday since it seems to be a classic.

FMA : Oh yeah I dropped it at vol.16-17 a long time ago because I had to wait months before next volume would be released. Will reread it from the beginning someday.
Jyu Oh Sei : Would have tried it if a scanlation team had picked it up.
Ghost Hunt looks fine.
Deadman Wonderland : full of generic characters and generic events. Dropped it.
Black Butler : a friend of mine said it copies a lot from other authors such as J.K.Rowling. Seems to fit my expectations though.
Chaos;Head : Heard it was bad because 12 episodes was too short and the ending was completely screwed up.

kaiji : looks good but is it okay even if I don't know the rules of mah jong ?

School Days : seems fine but I saw a lot of people trashing it.

Banana Bread Pudding : will try it since it is 5-chapter long anyway.
Flower of Life : why not, but aside from one exception shoujo mangas never were my cup of tea.
River's Edge : same as BBP.
Devilman : looks good.

I didn't bother answering to people who didn't bother checking my list.

Shinrei Tantei Yakumo

Ok these ones had me guessing, maybe you'll feel the same way. Some of them are a little darker. I don't read manga, I only watch anime. So, you can most likely find these as manga as well.

I don't think this is exactly what you mean, but have you ever tried Case Closed? It doesn't have a real engaging plot apart from the single cases. However it's difficult to guess the culprit (even if you choose haphazard) and I like it, although I don't usually read dtective novels.

Sorry for late response, mah jong arc is the last one and i haven't read it, but before that it's similar to liar game where they play weird gambles (all of them explained)

You can also watch the anime, as far as i know it's a faithful adaptation.

Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE and xxxHolic : added in my PTR list. I like adventure and fantasy but since my exams are coming soon right now I'm more in the mood for heavy tension (though a bit of comedy never hurts).

Kurozuka : seems interesting.
Otogizoushi : -> (*)
Shinrei Tantei Yakumo : looks fine though I'm kind of wary of the shoujo + romance combo.

Case Closed : same as LotGH. Will read it someday
Nadesico : -> (*)

Fate/Stay Zero : I actually played the VN some times ago but I didn't really enjoy it. Anyway it's an anime so I will check it out after my exams are finished.

Annarasumanara : Reading it now
Bokurano : also reading it now
Chisa x Pon : I didn't like Hetakoi but I will check it out if it's not the same thing.
Dorohedoro : Yeah I know it's awesome, but I'm still hesitant about reading it now because it is not finished so I wouldn't want to bungle my pleasure.
SWWEEET and Undercurrent : Both are short so I will try them out.

Zettai Shougeki: Platonic Heart : Given how low rated it is are you sure it's good ?

Kaiji : going to read it after Annarasumanara.

Many thanks to those who recommended me Aku no Hana and Oyasumi Punpun, I really enjoyed reading both of them.

(*) When I say I'd rather read a manga than watch an anime it's partially because the original version is often the manga. So it's my mistake for not stating it earlier, but I won't read a manga if it is the pale imitation of an anime.

Chisa x Pon is nothing like Hetakoi, and the thing that happens is, overall, quite a tasteless plot device in most manga, but the way the author handled it was professional, so I think it's not a bad recommendation. It suffers a low score on most websites because of it, but if you can handle a mature thing or two, I'd say read it.
I'm also filled with pure-hearted ulterior motives.

i would recommend Code Geass! 2 season total 50 episode not sure about manga.
but every episode without wasting your time , no dragging and deliver impact to your mind!

Stein;gate was really good too for this type of genre , it is a different time travel concept contain some romance. 24 total episode , the first 12 episode was kinda slow but really enjoy watching the character connect to each other.
