I noticed that many of the anime that I especially like have this common trait: they are set in a normal world like the one we live in but have just a splash of fantasy within them.

Examples of shows like this that I enjoyed:
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Cardcaptor Sakura (not necessarily looking for a mahou shojo show though)
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Durarara!!
Angel Beats! (somewhat fits the description)
Fruits Basket
Death Note
Inu x Boku SS

Are there any great anime with this characteristic that I have overlooked? A strong cast of characters really helps as well, and I would prefer for it to be a series of medium length (10-30 episodes). Reasons why you recommend would be nice.

Kamichu! - world is normal but main character is a goddess (rather shy).

Valkyria chronicals or better known as Senjou no Valkyria: Gallian Chronicles (the reason i said this one is because the world is semi normal with little bits of magic)

Thank you all for the recs :) I think out of all these, Aria, Kamichu!, and xxxHolic best fit the kind of thing I was looking for.

I've seen both Baccano and Steins;Gate and I think that they were pretty good.

As for Fate/Zero, I've had in on my PTW list for a while. Someday I'll get around to seeing it.

you could try:
-Mawaru penquin drum
-Occult academy
(those popped up first in my mind, when i red you are looking for something like durarara!)
Well, i don't know if my recommendation will be of any use, but this will: Contemporary Fantasy - precise name of the genre of anime set in today's world but with fantasy added, this could ease up your search)
