I made a comment in the club earlier today about suggestions to solve this problem we are having right now.

So what are your suggestions to this situation?

My suggestion is to make a database of doujins similar to anime/manga. Or make a new search option for doujins, that would be great.

You are already able to search for just manga or just doujinshi, so I don't see what the problem is with Xinil wanting them gone.

There should be doujin included in our database, but I believe that the initial searches made for manga should not include doujin, and that it should be included as an option under "advanced search". This way, those who do not wish to get pummeled by doujin each time they search for manga will be contented and have no basis for their argument as it would pose no detriment to them.

I can empathize somewhat with this mindset as it has happened to me on multiple occasions, and narrowing searches is somewhat irritating, though definitely bearable. However, a solution is so easily reached through this method and I have no sympathy for either side of the argument as a mutually beneficial compromise is so easily reached.

@Alindul
Agreed, that's the most logical solution to the problem. Anyone disagreeing should go see a doctor or something.

Exactly, or push it down to the end. Seriously, there is a better solution... but it requires them to revamp the site a little, but then... perhaps it is needed? To not even try is lazy.

I agree with Alindul's idea for the regular search. As for the Add search, I suggest that doujins be excluded from the manga results and add a "Doujins only" to the "Search for:" drop down menu so users can search for doujins.

Does anyone know how the site works... meaning if the people who do the coding and programing actually have training to do so? Because, depending on who does the programing will determine how fast and how well this can be done. I am assuming that, from the level of complexity, that surley they would be able to pull off a few changes like this...

So then... if he doesn't want to or doesn't know how... that might ruin that...

One of my solution ideas:
ZinnKid said:
I was expecting Xinil to answer some questions in the thread (It is his thread). Like:
What of very popular doujinshi? (Like Neon Genesis Evangelion Re-Take, which is #52 on this site) Is there any way to 'reference' a doujin's 'notability/popularity' and prove that it's more than a "silly 1 page comic on code geass"?
-----
That actually is a serious question. Even myself believes that not every doujin should be on MAL. What of the immensely popular and very professional doujins? I think there should be some kind of 'inclusion criteria' for doujns, like:
1. Must be made by an Asian manga-ka or circle.
2. Must be scanlated into English or other non-Asian language.
3. Proof of popularity. (ex: Over 100 members reading+completed on M-U)
4. Or proof that it was made by a popular manga-ka (there are several non-anime titles in the MAL database because they were made by 'popular' or 'iconic' Asian studios. This should be the same for doujins.)

1. Seems fine to me, I can stand by it completely.

2. I disagree, entirely. I don't see why a doujinshi should have to have been translated for it to be worth listing. I own a number of doujinshi with no english translations (that I'm aware of) that are just as good as, or better than, some of the stuff that has been translated (hai porn).

3. I disagree with that too, on the surface of things. Their database is hopelessly incomplete, and MAL shouldn't have to rely on it. MAL should be better than it, not restricted to it ;)
Rambling example using what are possibly 'lesser known' doujinshi from the Gundam SEED franchise, and some relatively well known Sailor Moon doujinshi anthologies in this spoiler tag:

To make another example, non spoiler tagged this time, I'm going to use a not-quite-so-random pair of doujinshi: the Evangelion Re-Take and Re-Take After some of you are so fond of.
It has 557 people of one type or other listed on mal, and only 288 on Baka-Updates, and Re-Take After has 358 on MAL but only 201.
I know they're both still safely above your 100 line, but I do hope you'll agree theres quite a difference in numbers between them, and that using the numbers on BakaUpdates as a basis for popularity wouldn't be entirely fair.

3.a Despite what was said above, if going by the series listed on Baka-Updates would keep at least some doujinshi on MAL, I guess I could support it. If it were the only way. If I recall I once got my BU account upgraded so I could add series and authors. I wonder what sort of sanctions they place on adding new doujinshi to their system...
4. What counts as a 'popular' or 'iconic' mangaka or studio?
By this do you mean just mangaka who publish commercial series too? Or do you mean popular doujinshi artists and circles - and if you do, who gets to decide which ones are popular?

Edit: Sorry, was trying to fix some formatting and phrasing. Didn't realise you'd be quoting me at the time ^^;

I'm trying to look for a compromise.

The thing is, even if we convince Xinil to keep certain doujins, I don't think the H ones will be included. I believe that when Xinil said "bombarded with dozens of retarded manga titles", he was referring to the hentai ones.

I was only using M-U as an example and pulled 100 off the top of my head. I meant that we need to prove that this particular doujinshi is notable and popular.

It would be the decision of a Manga DB Mod if the artist is 'popular' or 'iconic'

I wasn't intending to imply that the hentai ones were better. The 'hai porn' was meant to be somewhat sarcastic.
I was intending to imply that while the porn might be whats easier to find, or easier to find translated, a lot of the comedies or more serious stuff with good and detailed stories and whatnot is better than it, and should be considered for the database despite the fact translations aren't readily available.

I was trying to reorganise my phrasing of that to make it clearer when you quoted me ^^;

True... I think if it is actually 'iconic' it should be included. But those that are not of good quality... in other words meaning a five year old drew it, definatly shouldn't be. I mean, Joe Smoe of the street can't go and make a Doijin...

I think then the question then becomes, what is iconic and why is it iconic.

I find it ironic that they have this on the site...

Yet they deleated the actual Manga adaptaion of Harry Potter from the site archives, if it ever was there, along with the HP Doijini.
