Since they're both about the same thing, which one is the better watch, the series or the Gunbuster vs. Diebuster Movies?

I would say series. But I wouldn't recommend you marathon the series in one go.

Gainax just cant do compilation movies but if you are easily bored go ahead.

You are talking about Top wo nerae 2 aka Diebuster right? I watch the OVA series first and then I don't bother watch the movie, although they say that the movie has some new scenes

Having seen both now, I thought I'd answer my own question:

Watch the series. When you get that rewatching urge, watch the movies.

The series > the movies.
