What I like at this anime (apart from the sci-fi story) is the soundtrack... There are so many good songs in it, carefully selected so that they match with the theme of each episode episode.

Nice picture!!!
Yeah, the story is sad for the most part. When you finish FMA you should try Brotherhood too. I've seen both and I liked Brotherhood a bit more.

This seems to be the general case. Gotta watch Brotherhood too someday then.

I only watched FMA and thought it was kind of mediocre. But I know there are some aggressive fans out there (experienced firsthand) so I better shut up about it now.

Maybe is because more then half of FMA is filler, as opposed to Brotherhood which follows the manga more accurately. In my case, I found the story more interesting and a lot of things are better explained. Plus there are some cool new characters.

I agree, brotherhood is better and explains the story much better. I find some of it pretty disturbing as well which is why I like it so much! XD

I still forget to order this card. [and right now I don't want to bump the damn thread!] This series is one of the most artistically beautiful I've ever seen. Almost like it better than Kanashimi no Belladonna. (almost) People say "oh it's just layers of patterns and whatnot". Well w/e I wish more animes were made like this one.

Synopsis from ANN: A second year student from the Kyoto University finds himself entrapped amid a plethora of unsatisfying possibilities to change his life. Accompanied by Ozu, his mischievous best friend, and Akashi, a stern engineering student, the nameless protagonist trudges through each path as he tries to grab the opportunity that seems to dangle right in front of his eyes.

This series is rife with philosophy and presents a tale that is both memorable and enjoyable. It is told in first person point of view, and the main character is a guy left unnamed and referred to by Watashi (which means self or I injapanese) by viewers. He reminisces on the journey of his college life and the many parallels he travelled. The subs go by so fast that the anime has been known to turn some viewers off. But, anyone intrigued by the brilliant writing will put up with it and eventually get used to it. The speed of the dialogue actually adds to the universe. There is so much symbollism in the anime (which stems from a novel) that it is impossible to explain even a piece of it in this short review. Pinpointing the main message of this series is quite debatable among fans as well. [We all have our theories!]. For example, I think the prominent theme is believing you can shape your fate b stepping outside of your comfort zone intead of letting yourself drift through life and mingiss the best opportunities.

A major catalyst character of the series, Akashi (which can symbollize many things, but most notably, possibly akasha or the akashic record- or the buddihist akashi [air of spiritual realm]- the name could have multiple meanings as could all the characters' names/personalities) is a quirky female who is well developed in her place in the story.
Other plot catalysts include: Ozu (which could possiby be a nod to Yasujiro Ozu [the late perfectionist director], which would make sense allegorically, as Ozu was known for his social criticism and revolution around themes dealing with adolsecence --- and in this series Ozu usually manipulates situations & other characters), Fortune Teller (who plays an obvious role, at least in the main scheme), and "Master" Higuchi Seitarou, who is "originally introduced as a deity of matrimony in the first episode" (MAL character page: Seitarou Higuchi). Higuchi plays a big role in trying to point Watashi down the right "rosy campus life" path (He could stand for wisdom gained in retrospect since he is Watashi's senior in his last of his 8 yr stay). Watashi must keep repeating his time in school until he gets it right. Why does this happen? You'll have to watch it to find out!

The series is definitely not to be missed, if only for the symbollic and genius story. It is also humorous to see this guy stumble through his many paths trying to avoid and change his fate. The art is different and fun to watch too. It is one my (gINGEr) personal favorites (and I can vouch for its worth to anyone who says different! ;).

Directed by Rintaro [^_^], the series features a dramatic narrative and a symphonic score performed by the Tokyo Philharmonic. While superficially a space opera the series raises a number of issues from the challenges in the life of men to the limits of violence as an effective solution to problems. For example, while Harlock is sympathetic to the plight of the Mazone—a refugee people fleeing a dying planet—he finds no pleasure in his battles with them.

Toei only recently released the show in 2008 as a pay-to-watch-service on IGN's Direct2Drive; but then in 2009, it decided to provide it for free on Crunchyroll to those who are willing to wait a certain number of days, and as part of a subscription to those who want it immediately. Funimation as well as Crunchyroll and Hulu have all the episodes with subtitles streaming on each sites respective Video Portal.

Leiji Matsumoto originally created Captain Harlock (sometimes spelled Captain Herlock) in his mangas. From wikipedia: "The character is introduced in Adventures of a Honeybee (1953), but did not make its debut as lead character until 1978's Space Pirate Captain Harlock." Captain Harlock is the most recognizable character from the Leijiverse. There is a reason for this. The series is fantastic for space opera fans. Harlock is a calm & cool, yet strong-willed character. He's a good-hearted pirate. ;D He is the definition of a perfect hero, and this is draw. He always knows what to do! If I was a space pirate :P --I would want to be like Harlock. From wikipedia: "Harlock is the archetypical romantic hero, a space pirate with an individualist philosophy of life. He is as noble as he is taciturn, rebellious, stoically fighting against totalitarian regimes, whether they be earthborn or alien. In his own words, he "fights for no one's sake... only for something deep in [his] heart". He does not fear death, and is sometimes seen wearing clothing with the number 42 on it. In Japanese culture, the number 42 is associated with death (the numbers, pronounced separately as "four two", sound like the words "shi ni" -- meaning "to death")." He watches over a young girl stuck on earth, and this plot is a bit sad. You'll have to watch it if you want to know. And believe me, it's worth it. If you've seen & liked any of Matsumoto's creations, then you've probably already tried Harlock. If you haven't, you can't call yourself a fan yet. Queen Emeraldas & Tochiro also emerge in this series.

Two films were made after the start of the series, and 3 sequels were made later. Besides these, Harlock characters and its story surface in many of Matsumoto's later creations. Tochiro, Emeraldas, & different versions of Kei also appear in later works. To really appreciate any of the later stuff, you must start with Harlock! (but skipping Yamamoto stuff isn't so bad. xP)
