BSD is probably one the best made modern animes ever and anyone who catches up to S5 agrees but the issue is S1...
S1 is such a tough season to get the whole idea of the anime that so many of people i personally know have either dropped it or stopped at S1 without further intentions of moving forward !!

given i was not a completionist i might have dropped myself but i stuck and even made myself watch S2 and it wasn't until S3 that BSD truly went into its element

now ofc im not saying everyone needs to watch it, its just i know that my friends would enjoy it S3 onwards but the first 2 seasons are not up to that mark to enjoy

Idk for me season 1 was pleasant enough that I wanted to stick around to see what happens but it was still quite forgettable. Season 2 onwards was when things started to ramp up and season 2 is one of my favourite seasons out of the five.

I do not think S1 is tough. One is not supposed to understand what was never told to them. This attempt only makes them exhausted.

As someone who watched all of BSD a couple months ago, I cannot tell you a single plot point from season 1 but it was still a fun watch ^^

I don't understand what so many people say about first season of bungou stray dogs. It is really cool thing. It might not be as thrilling as season 4 or 5, but its still a masterpiece, and is reason why I love this show. It shows some really cool fights (for example Dazai and Kunikida fight when they switched places). Though season 4 or 5 was extremely interesting to watch, I still think that first season was the best (probably because I love how Dazai was presented here). In my opinion hating on first season of bungou stray dogs is just like hatin on JoJo's bizarre adventure part 1 and 2 and skipping them, which is invalid. If you dont like season 1, problem is not with the show, rather with you (no offense, I don't want to be mean).

I did not enjoy Season 1 very much, and while the flashback at the start of Season 2 was good, I just gave up on the series once they returned to the present day.

I don't remember much about the series, other than the story being an absolute mess and the characters being hard to sympathize with.

I've heard that things do get better from Season 2, but haven't heard how exactly it gets better... Maybe the series just isn't for me.

Season 1 is just introduction. You meet the heroes, you meet the villains and that's basically it. Season 2 is where stuff starts to happen.

The only issue with S1 is the sudden change of tones from comedy to serious and viceversa, something which it was improved later. I think some people don't like S1 since the constant Atsushi's orphanage flashbacks and its mostly a season to introduce the main cast rather.

.

If they get bored by S1, BSD is probably not for them.

That's your opinion. For me, the first 4 episodes of season 2 are - and will forever be - the best.
Season 1 - it might be a bit difficult during the first half - so 6 episodes long. Me, personalky, I loved it from the very beginning.
It is an anime, that build-up continuously. Just how it has to be.

Well, I guess that's just your taste. For example, I didn't like Monster, and think it's really overrated. There's no accounting for taste. Have a nice day bro

I kind of agree, Season 1 felt like a bit of a slog to get through. At least the 1st half, but I got into it later. Fortunately I rarely drop stuff. LOL

What's your actual complaint?

...Is it that the beginning of the Series, aka season 1, is not as exciting as later seasons?

No shit^^
It's the beginning of the story. It's Exposition. It's getting to know all the characters. It's not the climax, yet....you're right πŸ˜…

But that's not "tough" or "a huge problem"
That's just how storytelling works.

If you're talking about the bigger picture or how the Show introduces its core themes then I think S1 does a solid Job building up for later seasons.

I have the opposite opinion, my favorite season was S1or S2, they kinda blended together since its been a while and for me I liked it less as the seasons passed on.

Yeah I'm basically the same, season 4 was the weakest for me, but season 5 redeemed it for me from episode 1 so ultimately I doubt someone would like the other seasons considerably more since 3/5 start with a flashback arc.

I personally enjoyed S1 very much, mostly because I sympathized with the characters and laughed a lot lol, even if the sudden shift in tones stressed me out sometimes.

Many people mention that bsd lacks plot or they don't know what it is, and, in my opinion, it has to do with how the anime is first adapted. Everytime the anime deviates from the manga it misses. And in this season especifically for me is the whole 'blue king' thing.

I loove love that they wanted to explore kunikida and Dazai's dynamic, I enjoy them a lot, they gave us a lot o funny moments ngl, but storywise it personally was such a pain to sit through.

It felt a bit out of place and honestly I didn't know what was going on most of the time cause' I was only thinking: what's the point of this story? It doesn't seem to tie to anything already established, it doesn't tie to Atsushi, it feels like there's something missing from this story that I just can't get interested in it.

Turns out that story was actually the story from the 1st novel. And it's actually set as Dazai's entrance exam. It was completely unnecesary for the first season, and also makes no sense. They butchered that story for literally no reason (and it's so good too ToT read the novel pls)...

When I read the bsd manga, it flows better, feels more straightforward without that arc. If the first season had just stuck with the manga it would probably catch more ppl since they establish the first important arc (guild) early on.

In general, not only do they miss when they change things, but they also cut out lots of other stuff that gives characters more charisma or even depth.

My guess is they weren't sure how to adapt it well since bsd has stories here and there and it's...disorganized(?) lol, and they only came up with adapting the novels as flashbacks later on. Like they were "experimenting" with the first season, or idk maybe I sound crazy, anyway I might have turned this into a rant abt the bungo adaptation but oh well...Still love the anime though β™‘

I would say the first season isn't very clear on what it wants to be (Tone shifts, for example) and a lack of a clear goal it's what leaves ppl wanting to drop it. That or probably they simply don't sympathize with the characters. I still believe one of the reasons the 1st season is the weakest it's because of how it was adapted, but that's just my opinion.

woah this was long sorry I'm a huge bungo fan β˜†

Funny how season 3 is exactly when it got repetitive for me, and seasons 1 & 2 where the most enjoyable because of the sense of mistery still surrounding the world and specially the character's philosophies — this is all dumbed down and reduced to existential monologues that don't really add to what we've already had seen.

I personally enjoyed season 1 a lot and it was the reason I continued the series. I myself have had some friends that didn't like the first episodes and gave up on it tho, so I believe it's you'll either love season 1 or dislike it for completely subjective reasons
