Look we all know that this rock anime is PEAK! well that's what i want to say. Because honestly the only thing holding this anime back is no like. Character moments?

Like the anime is still great and the visuals are superb and I just love watchin ruri be ruri. But I guess I fear that what if these things fell off y'know? some mentioned (either way I thought the quality was perfectly fine) that there was a quality dip last episode. But not only that, I just feel like i want to go beyond the rocks and actually get to know our characters now tbh. I feel like they've been like placeholders on this great journey that while lovable, is starting to make me question our occupants of this journey in the first place. And now im just getting worried yet accepting that I should be taking this at face value which is "we like rocks so lets go find rocks".

Which is fine tbh I mean its still great nonetheless. Im just curious if others have felt this same sentiment in wanting to actually get to know our characters, their backstories, their personal lives, or even build on their relationship without having to involve it with mineralogy. obviously that sounds dumb on paper lol its a rock anime but I think id be nice to personally know these characters more and there lives. Especially to avoid this feeling atleast I have that if visuals and quality diminish then id diminish the anime.

Mind you I could be wrong in not analyzing that maybe these character moments happen within their journeys finding the rocks? but it just doesnt feel as personable as id hope for.

Yeah I would love to know more about Nagi and her backstory. What got her into mineralogy? Did she have a mentor as well?

yeah yeah exactly. I always see her at times sitting lost in her thoughts until rarity confronts her with something and well we see the usual. I'm really interested I'm what they're lives a like outside of the minerals

Oh I definitely felt this while watching the show, I really hope there is some character focus next. I was going to read the manga to see if it pivots to that at all but I've yet to get to doing that...

Girls Band Crystal? (Ruri's unstable, tantrum-prone personality is criticized by many just as Nina Iseri's)

In a similar vein, people were asking for Cells at Work anime to be made into a family-themed series... (Ms. red blood cell + Mr. white blood cell + Platelet chan = family)

Truth is, people invested in STEM fields are less emotional than the average: studying for uni, then peering into the microscope for years and churning out publications to earn a PhD takes away a lot of time from Real Life (TM). At least Nagi doesn't have asperger or autism, so she's able to bond with Ruri.

honestly maybe i just have a type lol because I loved Nina in girls band cry. Idk Nagi is just bland for me right now. Like lacking in substance in who she is besides this "mentor figure that puts ruri back on track." It's why I hope for future episodes to really tell us more about these characters so then I'd grow to appreciate her more. Because character wise, ruri is carrying it for me rn.

But to your reasoning that could make sense honestly. Like even for girls of her archetype they have a lil spice y'know? but she kinda just sticks to herself and her craft and it shows. To each there own I guess but I get what you mean

Yeah, I mean, it's a CGDCT anime, except they aren't necessarily doing the cutest thing nor in the most "cute" way possible... and I don't feel PARTICULARLY healed or rested as a good iyashikei would make me feel (which... don't get me wrong I'd love if it did that... aria the origination is my favorite anime)... and it isn't particularly funny... so to me, aside from the geology fun facts, there really isn't much in the way of entertainment. You also then don't have much in the way of any information about the characters, or special moments between the characters... or much of a direction for the plot.

It's a very pretty show about about cute girls doing boring rock things; the characters are cute (even if they don't seem to push / weaponize this side beyond the occasional fanservice), and then there's not much else. It's part of why honestly I've decided to drop this one. Maybe if I hear they really knock it out of the park later on, I might come back. I just find that it's lost my interest, and to me one of the most important purposes of anime is that it is an entertainment medium. This show fails to entertain me, even if the art looks nice.

I was reading the Manga guide to Biochemistry, Molecular biology, and others, and I wonder why couldn't they be made into anime! Not too much interest in science? "Encouragement" anime like Yama no Suzume, Bocchi the Rock seems to work.

It's a Slice of Life series and it's already commonly understood and accepted that SoL series as a general rule of thumb aren't heavily plot-based so many people expect them to be much more character-based and focused and essentially making the characters' daily lives and ups and downs the story. But that's not all SoL either. Some are much more heavily topic or theme-based, which I would say that this is one of those. It's not plot as it's not really a linear series of events, but more like just discussion and exploration of a topic. Obviously geology and mineralogy in this case.

That's also why I watch SoL. Could the characters be more dove into and fleshed out? Certainly. Nagi and Imari are somewhat of placeholders (ones who could be exchanged with other characters of similar traits filling their shoes and roles without much feeling out of place), maybe even Nagi moreso than Imari. And Ruri is the most animated and distinguished, which arguably by rights she should be as undeniably the main and titular character.

But truth be told, I'm watching the series for the topic it focuses on (an opportunity to learn more about geology and mineralogy, subjects which I know little about, in a more digestible/accessible way through my anime hobby) and for the vivacious beauty, energy, and light humor of Ruri and her character. The other characters mostly being limited to basic support roles isn't something which really bothers or registers as a negative to me.

It's more like, I expect series to excel in different areas and this isn't one I ever expected either an elaborate plot or an in-depth character study out of. I expected some educational information and perhaps thought-provoking conversational exchanges, as well as eye candy. And it's delivered on those fronts.

Well yea of course we know SoL anime aren't going to have character moments. Like im not expecting drama or moving plot points. But y'know simply enough wanting to just get to know our characters y'know? Like I like how seto was introduced (prolly was the best ep since ep 2) over how she was introduced but it doesnt even need to be as elaborate as how she was introduced. Simply enough just getting to know our characters and havev
the focus shift to less of the rocks and more of ur usual banter toward external things. Like how in k on, yea they're a band and its a band anime but we get to see more of the character sides to them rather than the band side of things. In which I see as the true SoL CGDCT appeal. But honestly as of the recent episode im confident actually that we're gonna start getting this now so im hype

same, most of the ones with lots of character moments are part of the "coming of age" subgenre, which is where slice of life as a genre actually peaks. I can definitely envision this show having more character moments as it progresses, I think Shouko has what it'd take to pull something emotionally striking
