Plot Summary

Living in the slums of a wealthy town, Rudo and his foster father Regto try to coexist with the rest of the town's residents, but Rudo despises the wastefulness of the upper class. Ignoring the warnings from those around him, Rudo regularly rummages through the town's garbage in search of anything useful or valuable to save from the "Abyss"—a massive hole where anything considered trash is dumped, including people. Rudo's biological father was one such person, having been thrown into the Abyss after he was accused of murder.

One day, after running into a mysterious figure on the way home, Rudo returns to find Regto's dying body on the floor. He is immediately found at the scene by the authorities and is charged with murder. No one believes his claims of innocence, and he is thrown into the Abyss. Instead of dying, however, he finds himself in a strange, foul-smelling place surrounded by monsters made out of trash.

When Rudo is attacked by said monsters, he is saved by a man named Enjin, who reveals himself to be a "Cleaner"—someone who uses special weapons called Vital Instruments to combat these creatures. In order to get his revenge on the one who killed Regto, Rudo reluctantly becomes a Cleaner to fight his way back up and out of the Abyss.

Episode 1

And it starts off just like how something like Attack on Titan does to really drum up interest in the show. Life is crappy, but at least peaceful. And all of the sudden everything goes to hell towards the end of the episode. In this case, Rudo is framed for killing his adoptive father Regto as some masked man kills him to take his grimoire just as Rudo arrives to see him doing so, and then the authorities swarm in immediately and declare him guilty on the spot and sentenced to death without giving him a chance to tell the truth, which in this case is to be thrown into the pit. But Rudo somehow survived it and is now determined to make sure the really killer pays.

Crunchyroll did hype up this show seeing that the manga is supposed to be great, and it is. It was just confirmed that this show will run for two cours, so there's plenty of real estate to make substantial progress.

Oof that was depressing, class warfare huh? Well it is studio Bones so I'll give it a whirl. The garbage pit is hell huh? Fun fact In the New Testament when it says something about "sinners burning in the fires of Gehenna" it's often translated or interpreted to mean Hell, but Gehenna was actually the garbage dump outside Jerusalem. It was in a valley where they supposedly used to sacrifice children in fires to Molach.

Episode 2

The Pit, or rather the Ground as it's called, is pretty much Earth that is just one giant landfill as the Spherites dump all their trash from the sky, but people are actually living there. However, with trash accumulating like crazy that the air has become toxic and has given rise to trash beasts. Rudo meets up with Enjin, who is quite hostile towards him, but saves him seeing that he knows that Rudo knows nothing about this world. And then a bunch of black market traders take Rudo hostage knowing that Spherites, especially live ones, fetch quite a high price. But Rudo awakens his power as a Giver to fight back. And as such, he's being made to join Enjin's team to get told everything about the world, but he's not going to do it. Rudo is in quite a perilous situation, but he has what it takes to survive in this place and deliver payback to the Spherites who made this place a hellhole that it is.

So, he's developed the power to create tsukumogamis, I guess? Too bad they don't transform into cute naked girls but I guess one can't have everything.

The styling on the eyes reminds me of Bungo Stray Dogs.

Obviously a decent budget and the OST seems cool. I will watch more.

That was OK. Still a big question mark about whether or not this will be worth watching in the long run. Not a fan of the OST myself.

Episode 3

Rudo is now in the city where Enjin's team is abased in and he meets his teacher, Zanka, in a rather dramatic way. Rudo's money gets stolen by a cat, and he gets it back using Zanka's staff, taking it not knowing that it was his and not some piece of trash, and Zanka gets upset about it leading to a fight. But then Rudo got his hands on a plunger and Zanka is deathly afraid of the poop on it. As it turns out, Rudo can make anything he touches become like a Vital Instrument through his gloves, which is quite the rare and valuable ability. After seeing Rudo pick up the plunger, things were really hilarious and that was funny to see Zanka's reaction to it.

Ha. Ha. Ha. (sigh)

Well, I appreciate the fact that they tried to inject some humor in this one but almost every time, they played it out so long the funny just kinda fizzled. Still, it was nice to have a break from the relentless edgelording. The new characters seem okay so far and the animation continues good. I'll continue.

Episode 4

Rudo has joined the Cleaners, or at least unofficially so since the leader is out on duty and he can't be welcomed in until he's back. This episode introduces Riyo as she shows that she's a tough girl there, all while Rudo continues to try and make sense of everything. He's out to get revenge on the guy who killed his father, and then to let the Spherites know that what they are doing is a crime against humanity, but he doesn't stand a chance unless he understands his VI, and he nearly bit the dust there. Rudo has the potential to be great and the Cleaners know about that, but he has a lot to learn. But before that he needs to man up.

Okay, I wasn't too sure about this show at first but I've decided I like it now.

Of course, Riyo helped a lot with that decision. First anime girl I've seen with cum gutters. (iliac furrows)

Episode 5

The last battle is making Rudo question what he really wants seeing that he's only thinking about getting stronger to get revenge on the guy who framed him for murdering his father. The Cleaners get a new retrieval assignment, and there's another fallen Spherite, but it was all a trap by Raiders as they are after Rudo to profit off him. They are off against a hag whose VI lets her create mud clones. But while it looked overwhelming, Zanka was able to figure out how her power works, and uses that to mount a counterattack. But now he's up against their boss who comes in from behind just as he takes out the other two members of the gang. Pretty typical shonen battle that emerged here as the enemy seems overwhelmingly strong, but a weakness is found and exposed.

Episode 6

After dealing with one Raider, Zanka is taken down by another Raider in Jabber, and the guy sporting the dreadlocks is another Giver. Seeing Gris getting taken down by Jabber has Rudo agitated. And then Rudo's background is explained as it goes to show that he values things others perceive as trash. After that, Rudo is finally utilizing his VI to the full potential as the problem is that he's getting too emotional to see the big picture. He uses his VI to see all of Jabber's moves coming, and then sucker punch him when he's in range. After being beaten, Jabber is up to something seeing that he stabs himself with the claws. A pretty typical shonen fight there as the enemy seemingly overwhelms the good guy, but he figures out how to fight back on the fly. But the fight is far from over as apparently stabbing himself unleashes his VI's full ability or something.

Episode 7

Jabber is faster and more deadly after stabbing himself, but he goes totally berserk from it as he is a masochist. But Zanka recovers and sees that he understands Rudo's VI better than Rudo knowing that its power depends on the opponent's intent, something Jabber hid by stabbing himself. Just when it looked like Zanka finished him off, Jabber brushes it off as his claws do more than just stab and poison. Rudo's VI may be strong, but it has a weakness in that it has a time limit. But just when Jabber looked like he was going to finish everybody off, the other Cleaners arrive, and the Raiders end up retreating since the goon squad is on their way. The Raiders are going to be formidable foes to say the least seeing that it took everything to deal damage to Jabber, only for him to recover from it to keep on fighting.

Episode 8

After all that chaos, this is a laid-back episode as Rudo is officially welcomed as a Cleaner now that he has meet the boss Corvus. There, he is given a tour of the HQ, while he goes overboard with sweets, something he never got to taste in the Sphere seeing that they are reserved only for rich folks. Seeing that his body isn't used to handling sugar, much less that much at once, that he balloons, but quickly shrinks back to his normal size. And then Rudo learns a bit more about his VI, the power to recycle, and while it's quite useful, he can only use it three times before he faints. So pretty much, this is Rudo finally getting introduced to the team, something that would have happened earlier if not for the Raiders and the boss being out.

Episode 9

After a chill episode, it's now time for Rudo's first mission as an official member of the Cleaners that takes him to Canvas Town, a city of art. They were supposed to meet up with Gob, but he died that morning and he was led to a polluted zone without a mask as his passion overrode his reason. His pen VI is passed down to Remlin, somebody who he fears is too young to handle such great responsibility. But Remlin shows that she's more than capable of inheriting it as she puts on a show with the VI there, complete with fireworks and special effects. Art here is more than just ink on canvas as it's a show on top of that.

After meeting with Remlin, who now has Gob's VI after his death, they return to the Cleaners HQ where they meet August, who makes the clothes and masks the Cleaners wear. After getting some new gear, it's off to their next mission at Penta, a desert where a lady who apparently has seen somebody traveling to the Sphere can be found. They battle more trash beasts, and then that said lady, Amo, comes out to greet them. As Amo comes across as being suspicious that they ought to approach this cautiously, but something tells me she's quite dangerous, and knows a lot more than she is letting on seeing that she is not wearing a mask in a place where not wearing one means instant death. Let's see what Amo's deal is.

Turns out that the danger was not from the air, but her VI as she can cause others to hallucinate. Delmon gets caught in her trap and turns on his comrades, while Enjin is easily taken out. The Cleaners came to figure out how to get to the Sphere as apparently, she has the means to do so. But they are going to have to beat her to get that.

Episode 12

The situation was quickly dealt with as Tamzy tied up Amo, all while tying up everybody else and sinking them to the bottom of the tower to snap everybody back to themselves. Delmon was fooled into thinking that Amo is somebody who is dead. Now that the cleaners know what Amo's VI is, the Cleaners put their masks back on, but Rudo takes his off to deliver a beatdown. Rudo really lost it there, and the secretary back at HQ notes that Rudo's soul is filled with darkness. But Enjin manages to calm him down after beating her enough. After that, everybody has a friendly conversation with Amo now that she's aware that what she is doing is wrong, and she saw somebody go back and forth from the Sphere, the one who gave her the boots, which serve as her VI. So with that, the first half ends with there being an apparent path to the Sphere that Amo knows about, and we shall see what that is.

Mixed feelings about that episode. Mostly executed well but a I have a couple small nitpicks and one big issue with it. Mister creeper being a one dimensional, stereotypical, all-round, easily hated scumbucket was a bit lazy. It was obvious what was going on there so presenting it so blatantly was kind of insulting, but I guess you have to make things obvious for the low brained.

The real issue came at the end though. They basically fridged Amo and that pissed me off.

As it turns out, Amo had a tragic past as she was subjected to extreme abuse when she was sold to the trafficker known only as Mister. She had to fight hard to keep her boots, and ended up pushing Mister to his death when he tried to take them by force. So with that, the Cleaners finally get the information they were looking for, and it turns out the one who killed Rudo's father has made his way to the Ground. Things are about to get personal in a big way for Rudo now that he sees that the killer came for him.

The second half begins with Rudo focused on delivering payback to the one who murdered his father as that guy is now on the Ground. So with that, the Cleaners return to HQ, and visits Alice, who is quite knowledgeable about body pollution, and a trash storm comes where the Shperites toss their trash to the Ground with no regard as to who or what it might hit. But HQ gets infiltrated by the Marauders who demand Rudo, but Semiu and company repel them. And then there's a hooded man who has Amo's boots and is the leader of the Raiders, who lures the Cleaners into a trap in a dark place where they have the advantage. It didn't waste any time in intensifying the situation as they attack where it hurts, and doing it hard at that.

After your typical shonen action battle royale after the Cleaners fall into the trap set by the Raiders, everybody finds themselves in the belly of the trash beast. As for Rudo, he's now face-to-face with the leader of the Raiders, Zodyl, where he lets him know just how much he has learned being a Cleaner. The second half has been mostly action, but it's entertaining stuff typical for a shonen action show that this is.

And with that, the Cleaners are out of the giant trash beast after destroying the core of the monster. But of course, it wasn't easy. Noerde went berserk as using that much power is dangerous for her, but Rudo uses his VI to punch a wind hole out of the beast that sucks Noerde out, leaving everybody else to cling to dear life. But Guita saves the day as with her VI, the kaiju costume, she plugs up the hole long enough to allow the Cleaners to destroy the core. So with that, the trash beast is destroyed, but there's still the matter of the boss of the Raiders as Rudo still has a score to settle with Zodyl.

Now that the battle is over, it's time to recover and think about what happens next. Zanka is recovering, and Rudo gives him fake flowers not realizing how rare they are in the ground. While that's going on, the Raiders see this as a success despite losing as they learned that it is possible to cross the border intact. And then Bundus gets a relic that belonged to Rudo's ancestor Canis as now he's one of the leaders in the organization. Pretty much, this episode is a transition episode as everybody is recovering from that battle inside the trash beast. One more episode left to go to tie up the remaining loose ends before moving onto the next arc that would come in a potential second season.
