Episode 1

After waiting five years and being entertained with the light-hearted and short After School Hanako-kun, the main show is finally back, and right off the bat Nene and company are going after one of the school's wonders, the Three Clock Keepers, after seeing Nene's homeroom rapidly aging, with Aoi's things not aging as a clue. So an alliance is formed to find out what exactly is up Aoi, and after following her into the auditorium, Hanako causes the chandelier to fall on her, which exposes Akane as one of the Clock Keepers, the first of the Seven Wonders. Great to finally be back with the main series as the first season ended with a teaser, and while this doesn't directly follow-up on that, it nevertheless is great to see Nene being cute and Hanako up to his old tricks.

So the aptly named Aoi Akane and Akane Aoi are the characters of focus here as Nene has encountered the toilet, Misaki stairs, the 4pm library, and Hell of Mirrors. Thus, the Clock Keepers is the 5th of the 7 wonders and it figures that the remaining three wonders are the focus of the season.

Episode 2

After finding out that Akane is one of the Clock Keepers, it didn't take long for the other two to show up as they go chasing the one referred to as Mirai around, who is the Clock Keeper of the future, and after she was caught thanks to Nene's clever trap and Akane's use of stopping time, Kako of the past shows up. Akane explains how he became one of the keepers, and he feels that he was all set up. And while everybody turned old, Mirai turned young. Then Mirai tries to steal Nene's time as well, which failed because she doesn't have much time left. So in the end, the Clock Keepers returned things to normal and everything was swept under the rug like that. Pretty amusing adventure that was, but of course messing with time can lead to some big problems, and at least Akane remained coolheaded through all this chaos.

Episode 3

The curse of the Misaki Staircase has changed as instead of killing somebody who steps on the 4th step, it breaks up relationships. Tsuchigomori arrives looking for insects, and shows Kou a book that contains something about Nene's past and future, and that whatever is written in the book will come true, and that includes an event in Nene's life happening today. And that thing is Nene kissing Hanako. A rather laid-back episode here that feels more like something that belongs in After-School Hanako-kun, but nevertheless things are moving along, all while a previous wonder gets revisited.

Episode 4

It's off to the Tanabata summer festival, where Nene, Kou, and Hanako all enjoy themselves there. And with the Tanzaku papers that come with their purchases, a wish could be granted if these papers of every color gets collected during the festival, which for Nene is to stop her pending death. But they don't get it all. And after that, Nene wakes up having gone back to 1964 when Hanako was alive as a kid, and Nene sees that Yugi wanted to become an astronaut. And after that, it's back to the present where it turns out that Yugi wrote on the Tanzaku to meet Nene again. This just feels like filler, but nevertheless it goes to show that even with not much time left to live, Nene can have a good time until then.

Alright, I was totally slacking off for this show and finally finished it. The whole trapped-in-a-painting saga just dragged on seeing that it took really long for Nene to convince Hanako, or rather Amane since in this world Amane is alive and not the ghost known as Hanako. Turns out that Shijima, the one who created this picture world, is sickly herself. So with that, six of the seven wonders have been dealt with as only the Reaper remains. I just felt that this show wasn't exactly suited for a long story arc that the 4th wonder ended up being.

So with that, it's onto the second half of this split-cour series.

And now, the second half begins with an opening theme song that's a huge departure from the previous two that were used for this series.

Episode 13

Final exams are coming up, and seeing how Nene is about to die that she shouldn't worry about it, but she doesn't like the thought about being a daikon-legged failure to the rest of the school. So she studies up and passes. In the meantime, Akane and Teru make a bet as whoever scores higher gets to make the other do one thing. And while Akane gets a perfect score, Teru got extra credit that make his score better than perfect, with the request being to support his brother Kou. But Aoi got the top score overall. And after that, the class does a school sleepover, and in the middle of the night Nene runs into the last wonder, the Reaper. It starts out being lighthearted, but things quickly get serious seeing that Aoi got kidnapped and Nene is up against the last wonder, who is quite menacing.

They've mostly been using Japanese myths, but then they use Orpheus and Eurydice

The second half of this season is much better than the first half

While I haven't been keeping up with everything this show has been throwing at me, the show finally gets to the matter at hand in that Nene is doomed to die, but Hanako is trying to find a way to reverse that curse. So in the second half, Aoi ends up being taken by the Reaper and is willing to sacrifice herself to the far shore so that Nene can keep on living, but Nene doesn't want her life to be saved at the cost of another living human. So she goes to the Red House and learns more about Hanako's time when he was alive, and then heads for the River Styx to rescue Aoi before she's whisked away to the far shore.

So to end things, Nene and company find Aoi, and then encounter the Reaper. Kou tries to fight back, but ends up being outmatched, while Teru ends up taking one for the team as he stops the Reaper from hurting Kou. And in the end, Aoi is rescued and Nene is prepared to die. However, Hanako isn't giving up and after Tsukasa drops a hint, he knows what he needs to do, and that is to break the yorishiros of the Seven Wonders, and for the Reaper that would be Sumire. Four of them are already broken, but breaking the remaining three is going to be tough. And that's where things end as Aoi has been returned, as well as the curse that will kill Nene soon, and she has been preparing to die, but there's another way to lift the curse.

Final Thoughts

While the show continues to have great artwork, interesting characters, and does a nice job with being light-hearted in the face of a serious problem, this season's story writing was kind of all over the place seeing that the story surrounding the 4th Wonder felt too drawn out and was longer than it should have been. The first half was lighthearted stuff before getting to the 4th Wonder arc that dragged on. But the second half, the story flows much better as the 6th Wonder arc was just right in length, all while the story is much more interesting and put together well. And of course, the selling point continues to be the interesting cast. So in all, it continues to be a nice show carried by its unusual art style that's fit for something supernatural. The story writing in the first half just felt too complex and dragged out, but the second half it's much more straightforward and flows better, and averaging those two things out is about as good as the first season.
