Shiratama and Asebi seem important. Why is that?

Asebi is important because the interaction between the four brides will be shown mainly from her point of view. Also, the main mystery-murder-intrigue line in the Cherry Blossom Palace depends on her. Shiratama will have a conflict with Asebi, as well as her own romance and trauma story linked to her past.

I don't remember from which volume of the novel, but from manga adaptation its from the prequel "A Raven for All Seasons" licensed in official English by Kodansha/K-manga. It's a parallel story that runs at the same timeline of the main story, so the Anime adapt both of the manga.
