Say who of the both amazing main character is more appealing to you..

For me it's Irako Seigen, just because he's more human with all his flaws and selfishness...just more natural.

Fujiki is the ultimate disciplined machine, but kind of dislike him for that...

and by the way, discipline will prevail to just talent in the final battle,...I'm sure of that.... Poor Irako :(

It is hard for me to decide, but I'll chose Fujiki. I guess I'm more sympathetic with him =)

Irako, because hes a real genius... even after being disliked by everyone in the dojo, and blinded, he didnt give up, and moreover, surpassed everyone in kogan ryu.
Mumyo Sakanagare has got to be the coolest move ever.
Fujiki as I see it is a sore looser, yes hes great and all in his training, but he lost to Irako not only in skill but in spirit aswell, and that put him below Irako from the first time they met.
As for how its gonna end, it looks pretty one-sided up to where i am in the manga, but I dont think anyone would end it just as one sided. Theres obviously gonna be a twist.

As much as I like the born genius type, and Irako is a very interesting character that you really cheer for, because of the misfortunes that happened to him and how he climbed up dealing with them. It sure raises admiration. So it's kind of natural to be drawn to him.
But I always tend to prefer the quiet types, because on the surface you see something robotic, as someone stated, but deep inside you know there is the harshest storm of feelings and battles. Those kind of people raise much more interest and anticipation for those inner struggles to finally show up. Those people overcome much bigger change throughout the story.
I think it's the case with Fujiki, I believe his ice wall is going to break one day.
So I'm not really taking any of the sides.

You put it well about Fujiki, almost the same opinion with what I have in mind. =)

Well Fujiki isn't a broad minded guy and he was quite foolish in many ways.
I remember when Irako entered the dojo with lipstick, Fujiki was too concerned with looks and blah.. and getting distracted.

While it is just skill that matters and such..

It's just too bad that Irako kind of got ahead of himself and decided to shag the wife of his sensei lolz and ofc got caught :p

They are both fools in a way.. but my vote goes to Irako!

Irako is one of my favourite anime characters at all. His character is truly amazing - crazy and mysterious, a genius swordsman and womaniser. I don't pity him as he lost his sight, kinda serves him right. What i like most about him, is his resolve to fight Fujiki not for hatred but out of a pure rivalry. lol sometimes it seems more like a love story between them both.

My vote for Fujiki was automatic, but in thinking about how to answer "why," well, the answer proved a bit more elusive.

I mean, throughout the series I felt the same emotions -sympathy, admiration, disappointment, anxiety, fondness, etc.- for both for both characters, each in their turn.

Irako definitely won points when he refused to rape Mie, but not as many as he could have if his choice had been a less self-serving one. It was a helluva gamble, though.

Irako also shined when he chose to protect Lady Iku from the bandits they ran into upon being exiled. However, because of his tendency to place his needs above all others, even this usually, honorable act was tainted by the question of his intent. Did he protect her only to serve his own purposes? Maybe not entirely so, but I believe it to be the driving force behind all of his actions.

Fujiki, in the instance involving Mie, is guilty of making a terrible decision, but fueled more by misplaced loyalty/honor rather than some self-serving, revenge-based agenda he might have been harboring.

In the end, the deciding factor was the intent behind each character's actions.

There's no question about it - Seigen Irako. A man who took the ill hand life dealt to him - born to a prostitute in a time when your lineage means virtually everything - and uses it as fuel for his ambitions to raise himself out of the mud. His easy smiles and carefully maintained appearance mask the struggles he has had to go through in life in order to get to where he is today.

The only thing I can actually fault Irako for in the series is for killing his mother. But really, she was so far gone, it seemed to be a mercy. He even fulfills her life's wish in the end by buying the pastries she dreamed of eating till she died.

As for Kogan - perhaps he shouldn't have killed Ikku's husband then took her as a sex slave when no one else would accept her because of the stain his actions put on her reputation. Seigen treated Ikku as more than an object, and if Kogan understood how to do that she wouldn't have cheated on him. The he gets all mad when he finds out as if Ikku owes him anything for killing her husband.

Fujiki is just a blind puppet following a murderous, selfish. and uncaring sensei. The Kogan school never treats Irako with even a slight trace of friendship - they're all just Fujiki fan-boys. They all get what they deserve in the end.
