There's an important plot point that isn't present in '73 version, but is included in the last few minutes of '79 compilation movie (it's translated), wich seems to be based on the '78 tv series. The ova introduces it pretty much from the very beggining and puts more time into buildup for a quite "unfortunate" event (it takes 2 full episodes in ova vs like 3 minutes at the end of the movie). The circumstances and people involved in it also differ between the two versions. The transition between any of the 70s stuff and ovas isn't smooth and introduction of new characters/events will most likely be slightly confusing either way. Going straight to the sequel won't make you miss much, but you might want to check the '79 movie to get prepared for the subject this ova is mostly centered on, and get a nice retelling of the first part of the story that mixes better animation with 70s charm of the tv version. However, it will also get you spoiled on something that happens in 2nd episode of Ace o Nerae 2. Hopefully I was able to clear some things out |
