It was a desperate, calculated move to make the audience only root for him when he was never likable to begin with. The only ones who are ever really shown are the cartoonishly evil ones like Charles, and it's clear that the writers originally had no idea what his true motivation was besides "racism" before ripping off EVA for the second time in a row in the director's career. And don't even get me started on Orange Boy. . . . He commits war crimes but then all is forgiven because of his heel turn because the real-life people he was massacring adored him in the real world. 🤨
Fortunately, the more heroic antagonists like most of the Knights of the Round are finally getting more attention and genuine depth in the new content. If all goes well, a good societal collapse of Lelouch's unstable, fabricated world will certainly make up for the writers slapping Nonette's fans in the face. Honestly, they all would have made MUCH better deuteragonists than Suzaku, because they had reason to defend their country. Some of them, like Monica, always wanted to reform the country, while my head canon says Dorothea (likely being a Number herself) was motivated by gaining recognition until she realized that people she cared about were getting killed, then her attitude begins to change. I do hope they give her this motivation in the new content. It would make her one of the most three-dimensional characters.
A sequel series where Dorothea has survived and has an upgraded Palomides and goes on a crusade to unmask "Zero" and avenge Monica would be so awesome! Given her volatile temper, as seen in "Lost Stories," I'd love to see Kikuko Inoue's range of voice acting as she's screaming in rage after she's realized she's lost everything (preferably while giving Suzaku a good beat-down). We could get more insight into all of the Rounds' motivations and backstories and the close bond most of them shared. (Monica canonically considered Suzaku a friend. It was in a line of dialogue in "Lost Stories.")
I personally love Gino and Anya's personalities, but they're also really flat because the script couldn't be bothered to take any attention away from Lelouch, even during his unneeded rom-com shenanigans. Evidently Gino became a Round to try to reform Britannia too, since the group held more political influence than any other aristocrats. But you wouldn't know that in the anime since the "Knights of the Round" novel was written after the anime and the writers realized how badly written he was. Ironically, that just made things worse because now he's just inconsistent. That's worse than being flat.
And I think it's funny how the show's general fans think Schneizel was always shown to be manipulative and conniving when there was no lead-up to his bombing of the capital city. It was on par with Ohgi's betrayal in terms of logic. More shallow drama that was done to extend the runtime and make the audience assume that only Lelouch could be right.
