yeah that bothered me a lot but the director has confirmed that they eventually get merried and you also have to remember that the timeline is not linear or just a single out come , taki cames from a timeline where itomori was destroyed by comet with all the people in it . in that timeline he had met a girl, because of this interaction they got connected by red string of fate ( sole mates) . and then then he eventually got compatible as he aged ( + three years)
to the same age as mistuha when he met her . thing happens taki get a lot of memories as a country side girl and mistuha gets a lot of memories as a city boy . eventually there 3 three years anniversary starts approaching and the bond started breaking. afer the date with miss okudera taki started feeling empty as it has been weeks since he last switch , they used to switch 2 to 3 times a week . he strted remember those memories to itomori and decided if he can't call her he is going to meet her , he started drawing the places he could remember ( BTW taki's drawing skills are amazing) and started planning a trip , he friend and miss okudera decided to go with him as he was only a teenager ( taki didn't tell his father about and his other friends was taking care of his apartment)
. upon reaching to itomori ( with help of a guy who was impressed with taki's drawing) they discovered itomori was destroyed with it's people by the comet three years ago , and the all the dairy entry made by mitsuha disappeared right in font of his eyes as the super natural forces starts to correct things , they where never supposed to switch places as they seperated by time ( and possibly by timelines or World s). they went to the town hall to check the record, in there he found his friends, grandma ( hitostuha ) , sis ( yotsuha ) , and her mistuha. he was devastated by this , his friends decided to go back next day .then in the night he found the ritual mountain on map, he went to that mountain as mistuha for the spite sake ritual of shrine maidens . after drinking the sake he found there the red string of fate switched them again , that evening they met the person they love for they first time ( mistuha finally met the taki she knew , before she met the three years younger taki )
thought being distant by time , they could meet becouse it was evening ( in the movie according to the old tongue evening is the meeting of two times)
the 5 years later for taki and 8 years for mistuha, they are living in Tokyo not knowing each other
. after mistuha and taki manage to save that town's people , they forgot of each others existence . taki Never had the band made by mistuha ( he had that for three years originally), mistuha also don't remember taki . they both have a empty feeling that space inside them that used to fill there memories and love for each other now was gone , whenever they are near each other than feeling clicks but they don't know each other's name .
you can solve the problem with this info as the timeline we know of is not perfectly a single timeline maybe someone or something messes with these phenomena in future or past in the same world it can make the rain stop or because of messed up timeline logic they can meet but differently this time , although in that case we will not be following up with the same mistuha and taki
maybe it's yostuha's time , as from the movie we know that grandma ( hitostuha )also had the same experience when she was younger . then it could be that because of yostuha the time normal and we get a sunny day on that day
