Ever watch a show that you thought would be good but for some reason or other turned out to be trash? Tell us about it. Greenwood's having a panel at GeekOn for trash shows and we need some horror stories to share. Post some genius entires, I'll read them all.
I'll start (TL:DR at bottom): Since I'm the resident degenerate here, Centaur no Nayami (A Centuar's Life) looked pretty promising. As a reader of the manga, I was interested to see what the animation would look like and was hoping it would be one of the hits for Summer 2017. Especially since there wasn't a lot to watch in Summer other than Abyss, Tsurezure, and some random mix-ins.
However, it was made by a Chinese animation company with little experience, which was an immediate red flag. It wasn't exactly unimpressive animation though, so I kept on. The biggest flaw with the show is that it didn't follow the manga at all. The first episode I can understand due to the unapproachable nature of the first chapter's antics (you'd understand if you'd read it), but they use way too many overly political and philosophical themes that come out of nowhere and from way later in the manga.
Such examples include concentration camps, world lore explanations, egalitarianism, socialist governments, kindergarteners talking about flowers for an entire episode, and overall the most boring scenes I've ever expected out of a monster girl anime. It makes Interviews with Monster Girls look like a 9 (not saying it's bad, but it's a relatively tame show as far as monster girl shows get; I love Interviews wMG).
They skip out on many of the scenes that involve...what was the name again? Oh yeah! A CENTAUR'S LIFE. The MC is skipped out of a couple episodes. In a 50 or even 25 episode show that's understandable, but 12? That's like almost 25% of a series with no memorable moments.
The scenes that I do remember involve the main trio of girls doing stuff like acting in a play, spying on the snake-person (not Lamia, it's...wrong), thinking of a DnD style story, and saving a hostage with archery skills (yes, those last two actually happened). It's stuff like that we needed, but never got.
TL:DR: Avoid Centaur no Nayami, it's boring and forgettable 75% of the time. If you want to watch a GOOD anime about horse girls, go watch Uma Musume, it's pretty good so far. You can also watch Monster Musume if you want a sexier route, or if you're REALLY into Centuars...I know of a certain H for you.
