You know, I've read quite a few manga where the author plainly said something like, "Most yuri manga focuses on how they get together but completely omits what happens afterward." I'm sure you've seen it as well. But I agree with those authors. Yes, it is very interesting and enticing to see how they got together, but the other part should be interesting, too. It is just somehow assumed in many cases that their life together is so unbearably perfect that there's not much to say about it.

But in real life, it's never perfect. There is a whole lot of challenges that you face when you are in an actual relationship. And only a handful of manga addresses this issue. Most of them just go for the good old "happily ever after." And this might be one of the reasons why certain stories just switch to other characters. They really fear that this assumed eternal happiness may be tarnished.

I have been reading the physicals as they come out and I have sensed this as well, though I have somewhat chalked it up to the way I have been reading it where I forget what's even going on. I'm 13-ish chapters behind and the new volume comes out in uhh...June of next year. I do feel that a lot of manga is plagued by not really knowing what to do once a couple gets together. It's unfortunate because that stuff is really good too. The grind of relationships and making things work. Still loving each other when the passion fades-the little things in life. I still love the manga though and I'll have a better idea of how I feel with a re-read. As far as the whole "everyone is a lesbian syndrome," yeah I hate it and it's annoying. Sometimes it's fine and sometimes it bugs the crap out of me.

I'll plug stuff since I'm here. Don't forget to signup for Secret Santa, vote in the November poll, and read manga for the Reading Challenge.

Speaking of which, I'm currently reading a manga called Tokubetsu na Chuutohanpa, and I wholeheartedly recommend it. It's not on MAL, as is the custom, but it's a really good story. I'd even say, relatable (judging from my personal experience)

I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said.

I am most definitely not a fan of "everyone is gay now" as well. It is so common in manga these days and even the titles that hold up after the main couple gets together get plagued by it. Anemone, for example, is a case in point, although it does a much better job of keeping things going for the original couple.

Still, it is a conflicting issue, at least a little. It's good that a yuri manga title doesn't end in volume 3 or earlier, but at what cost? Sasakoi is probably the one title that went down that line farther than the others. It's not clear what this manga is even about anymore.

Basically, the "later couples" could be characters in a completely different manga by the same author. They would have their own story without this feeling of being "secondary" to the original couple and without dragging all that mostly irrelevant context along with them. Every story needs an ending, and in the case of Sasakoi, the proper ending was when the main couple got together. Or, maybe, after their showdown with Lorelei. But that was it.

There's a novel by Auldos Huxley called After Many a Summer. There's a character there, an aristocrat from the 18th century, who found a recipe for immortality and has indeed acquired nearly eternal life. But over centuries, his body kept degrading because of old age, and his mind became almost obsolete, so in the end, he ended up a creepy, repugnant primate rather than a human being. I'm afraid that's exactly what happens to a manga if the author extends it far beyond the point where it should have ended.

I completely agree, but I am also not entirely a fan of "the whole cast is suddenly gay" in general.
Feels like it takes a bit away from the main couple and them coming out when the entire school is gay after the fact.

I am not sure why it is so common for authors to ignore the main couple after they get together. Just give us some more chapters of them together.
I think Arioto does it well, since other couples are introduced, but it is always from the 2 MCs perspectives, and they use it to reflect on their own relationship. However, it seems it is more popular to just swap the POV to the side characters and neglect the MCs these days.

Just give us some sweet relationship drama if you want to prolong it, we dont need to sit through the same thing again just with different characters. It would be one thing if the characters were as endearing as in 'kiss and white lily for my dearest girl'. But they all had their own stories going on. This feels like we lost the plot somewhere and now it is just about different MCs.

Honestly I’ve felt this way after roughly volume 4. The sudden shift in tone and characters made me feel like it was trying to keep alive what it had made. This is probably way sooner than most people would think. But yeah like volume 5 or so I feel was roughly when it started doing this.

Okay, this may be an unpopular opinion, but also a question.

Do you get the feeling that Whisper Me a Love Song is just meandering now? Like it really wants to extend itself, but the story gets more and more all over the place as the chapters progress?

It's way past the point of making every female character a lesbian now, which is pretty common, I admit. But now it seems to be on a rampage to create more couples. And the original storyline is getting gradually buried beneath all that. It's almost unnoticeable at this point, and I fail to see where all this may be going. That's the feeling I'm getting.
