a small mistake i made - 'konbanwa' is also not used for people ingroup. outgroup only.

@NinjaNyanko
Konbanwa is used for greeting people outside your group. For example, you might hear the reporter greet the audience with 'konbanwa' before reporting the evening news (the news crew = ingroup vs audience = outgroup). If you listen to a podcast, you might hear the host saying 'konbanwa' to the audience, or to someone invited to join the podcast. Can also be used to greet someone not very close to you during a night event.

Konbanwa is only used for greeting people that are not very close to you, which is why you won't hear friends greeting each other with 'konnichiwa' or 'konbanwa'.

Yes!!! Konbanwa, eh? Yay.^_^
It's been bothering me not to know what "good evening" is while knowing 'good morning.' Is it just used less in everyday speech, or does everyone just go to bed around 3 in the afternoon?

DreamingBeats | Jan 22, 2013 11:55 PM
@stunt_crazy
there are plenty of ways to greet people, but (arguably) the simplest ones are:
Ohayou (gozaimasu) = good morning
Konnichiwa = good afternoon*
Konbanwa = good evening

*not used for greeting people ingroup

"moshi moshi" is used often in telephone conversations, to make sure that the other person in the line can hear you, and can also be used when you want to draw someone's attention, in which case it can be roughly translated as "excuse me"

probably best to learn hiragana and katakana before worrying about such expressions though =p

@ Ninja - Thanks! I hope that the Katakana and Hiragana lessons will help with the memory. Soon, I'll be able to upload all the Kanji. But, for now, I'll still try working with the different thread lessons.

@stunt - hey!!! It's not dumb. But the most simple is "Ohayo" - it means simply "Hello", or "Hola". It's the informal greeting in Japan. "Konnichiwa" means "Good Day", something like "Salutations", which no one in America or Britian says that. We say "hello". So in Japan they say "Ohayo". I hope this answered your question.

This sounds like such a cool club. I know Hiragana to the point of where I feel pretty comfortable writing with it, and I've started on basic grammar and kanji, but katakana!
I've already learned it, but I forget all but the most common characters.-_-
Is it just because they aren't as commonly used as hiragana? I hope so, otherwise I'm having memory problems.

Alright i know i might be asking a really dumb simple question, but i know how in english speech there is a great deal of ways to greet someone, what is the best translation for greeting someone casually, or maybe saying hello everyone to the group?

GTC | Jan 2, 2013 1:47 PM
Doui tashi masta! (You're welcome!)

stunt_crazy | Jan 2, 2013 9:07 AM
OK arigatou!

GTC | Jan 2, 2013 7:36 AM
No. "Mushi Mushi" is said over the phone. It's not used in regular speech, but only when you answer the phone.

stunt_crazy | Dec 31, 2012 9:18 PM
Ok so i might sound dumb but I'll risk it XD I hear "mushi mushi" a lot for hello. Is that like the informal hello in japanese?
