Yuu is an orphan who killed three people: a mother and her young daughter, and a man. He is in prison (death row) waiting for his death to the point that he attempted suicide numerous times. Sister Monica sends him lots of letters and tries to visit, though he never answers them and refuses to see her.
Yuu's past:
His abusive father caused Yuu's three-year younger brother to go blind. Their mother could not handle the abuse so she abandoned her children, and so Yuu and his brother were sent to an orphanage after their father's death. Since the brother would get bullied a lot, they ran away and lived on the streets together. For his brother's sake Yuu shoplifted and even worked as a prostitute; but his younger brother jumped in front of traffic and was killed because he felt Yuu would have an easier life by himself.
The charges:
Yuu only meant to kill the man, whom Yuu reveals had paid his gang to beat up and torture other people. After seeing him on the street, the traumatized Yuu impulsively snatched an umbrella from a young woman nearby in an attempt to get revenge. His sudden movement accidentally knocked the woman and her young child onto the train tracks below, where they were hit by an oncoming train before Yuu could reach them.
His name:
Yuu asks to have a Christian name bestowed on him, initially as another way to pass time until his execution, and then as a way to be at peace with his past, after Juri tells him about her name. The name is Augustine, after Sister Monica's own son.
