Sunny is the main playable character of OMORI; his alter-ego/dream self Omori is the titular character of the story. Within the dream world, Omori lives in a separate area of Headspace known as White Space—a place that he has resided in for as long as he can remember, with only his sketchbook, computer, a box of tissues, and his black cat Mewo (Nyaako in the Japanese localization). When he comes out and joins his friends, he carries around a knife as a well-rounded member of the party, and can release the power of friendship to unleash a strong team attack.
Sunny is shy and extremely quiet, both in the real world and as Omori in his dreams. His emotions are very restrictive even before he spends four years as a hikikomori/shut-in, as he does not like to smile; despite that and being easily prone to anger, he still deeply cares for his old friends. He is described by others as a vivid daydreamer, a good listener, a good violin player, and having a great memory. However, Sunny lacks self-esteem and self-confidence, and feels guilt when relying on others, especially due to being the youngest of his childhood friend group.
After Mari's death, Sunny shut himself in his home and became even more shy. He becomes deeply depressed and gets hallucinatory panic attacks, both severe enough that he actively avoided contact with the outside world and any potential reminder of some past trauma he had. He has had a fear of heights, spiders, and deep water ever since he fell into a lake at his friends' secret hangout spot; he had fallen from a great height into the water after a spider suddenly showed up, and would have drowned had Mari not saved him.
These phobias intensified after Mari's death, as variations of Something, a physical manifestation of what seems to be related to trauma. In order to avoid all of this, he spends his days around the house playing computer games and sleeping, escaping into his dreams. When he does eventually come out of his house after four years, everyone comments on how malnourished he is and label him a psychopath for carrying around a steak knife.
When Sunny eventually decides to confront his past in a sleepover at Basil's house, he remembers the truth—Mari did not die by suicide.
Becoming frustrated with Mari's rigorous training, he tossed his violin down the stairs the night before their duet recital in anger. When Mari argues with him about this, he pushes her away, accidentally pushing her in the direction of the stairs where she fell and died. Believing she fell asleep, he tries to bring her to their bedroom before realizing that she is dead. Basil helps him stage her death as a suicide, but the two become traumatized and start hallucinating their guilt over this as a distorted silhouette of Mari's corpse—Something. Basil's Something resembles her hair-tangled body after crushing down the stairs and Sunny's violin, while Sunny's Something resembles her body after seeing her bare eye revealed through her hair while her body was hanging.
As a result of the accidental death, Sunny shut down and slowly started to forget the event, even unconsciously blocking out the doors to the rooms associated with the event and/or Mari's piano. He found his dreams in Headspace as escapism, but soon replaced his dream perception of himself with a monochrome-tinted doppelgänger wearing a black tanktop, striped shorts, and black tights, named after Mari's beloved piano. He will disappear into Omori's shadow while in Headspace, but his self-esteem crumbled so far after Mari's death that Omori will appear separately from Sunny in his subconsciousness after remembering the truth—over the course of four years, Omori evolves from a dream avatar to the physical manifestation of Sunny's suicidal depression.
When confronting Basil in his room after remembering the truth, Sunny's right eye eventually gets stabbed out by Basil's garden shears during their panic attack.
If Omori waters Basil's plants in Headspace after he goes missing, Sunny's Something will disappear in a secret ending after the good ending, as he gives Basil a tearful smile.
If Sunny loses to Omori in the final battle, either through dying before Omori summons HellMari and makes Sunny Afraid or choosing not to retry on the "Do you wish to continue?" screen, Sunny will disappear into Omori, giving into his depression and jumping down the hospital building through the balcony.
