Mother Hino

She is a fictionalized representation of Hideshi Hino's mother, and appears in several of Hino's stories that have an autobiographical slant. In all of them, she appears as a person who suffers from mental health issues, which translates to violent impulses and rejection of her children in favor of objects that she sees as her "real" children.

In Jigoku no Komoriuta, she frequently sings to a doll about Hell, and abuses Hideshi so harshly that he wishes for her death.

In Jigouken, she chooses to not give Hideshi away or kill him, despite the midwife predicting that he was strange when he was born. While fleeing from Manchuria to Japan, she was struck in the head with a rock, and the trauma resulted in abusive and violent behavior, and delusional episodes—most notably, mistaking a severed pig's head for her children. In the present, she lives with Hideshi and his family, and frequently asks whether she is in Hell.
