KanjiKanji is a young man from Matsu's village, and an aid to the village headman. He knows that Matsu and Yuki are lovers and covers for them, claiming that Yuki is Matsu's disciple. He is in love with Okinu, the village headman's youngest daughter, though he has no hopes that an uneducated peasant like him could marry her. At Matsu and Yuki's encouragement, Kanji gathers the courage to confess his feelings to Okinu as she is leaving for domestic training, and finds that his feelings are reciprocated.
