Hakuou (白凰)

Hakuou is a character in the Duel Masters anime and manga series.

His name loosely translates to "White Phoenix," which also reveals what deck theme he uses: the Light Civilization.

Hakuou is perceived as an intelligent Duelist with a strong winning streak. He has a habit of holding back to toy with his opponents until he has one or two shields remaining before taking things seriously and twist everything around with a single turn.

Despite often treated with the highest amount of respect due to his position as the leader of White Soldiers and his wealthy background, Hakuou is actually a cheerful, friendly, and kindhearted person who loves dueling more than anything. He often praises his opponents for their strength or well-made deck, regardless of the outcome of their duel. His charismatic and admirable self also made him very popular among girls, and often seen as the example of a "perfect Duelist."

However, there are multiple times where Hakuou has shown his biggest weaknesses that contradicts his "flawless" image, which connects to his guilt of failing to protect his late mother from her demise. At a certain point, Hakuou would do anything to become stronger and overcome his regrets, even if it's at the price of his own emotions and friendship. This leads to his ruthless personality and antagonistic role as he was controlled by Master throughout the first season, but he later returned to his usual self later on after being brought into the light by Shoubu.
