Gifuu Doudou - Episode 1
Anime Relations: Gifuu Doudou!!: Kanetsugu to Keiji
All I can say is that Gifuu Doudou was better than expected. I tried, but I couldn't keep a straight face throughout the whole thing.
First off the cast:
The story begins with Tarobei busy celebrating the construction of his new mansion. While they're partying, the MC, Keiji suddenly shows up with an axe and proceeds to demolish Tarobei's house–that was what everyone was expecting anyway, including me, but he actually just leaves a dent on a pillar. He did this to impart a philosophical truth that leaves Tarobei in grateful tears.
In the next scene, Keiji and Kanetsugu share a poignant moment under the moon. The show cuts into the OP, and then the rest of the episode is spent showing how the two met in the past.
One of the main highlights of this episode was this interesting historical tidbit that Kanetsugu mentions:
Uwanariuchi – a fight between women when a husband remarries another woman within a month of his divorce, AKA a government sanctioned bitchfight.
I'm not sure if the shogun actually approves of this, but in any case, it was an accepted practice during the time.
How it works is that the first wife gathers an armed mob and barges into the second wife's kitchen.
so she gathers her own mob, and they arm themselves too for an epic beatdown. Before it gets bloody, a third party is normally called in to bribe the first wife into leaving. (I wish I was making this up but this was copied almost word for word from the subs)
Apparently Keiji was the third party in this particular case. Other than him being a 'well-known eccentric', Kanetsugu and co. can't figure out why he would involve himself in something like this, but maybe they'll get into it in ep 2. The rest of this episode has Keiji strumming on a biwa, and I have to say that the animation for this was really disturbing, because the only thing that was moving was the hand holding the pick, everything else was a stillshot.
Overall not bad for a first episode. First time I've seen a show outside of shoujo that had petal storms appearing out of nowhere (even indoors). In terms of overall manliness, it was a 99.9/10 – almost on par with JoJo. The OP was also a pleasant surprise; it really set the tone for the show. ED wasn't bad either:
