Migrating to AniList and Anime-Planet
Anime Relations: Boku no Pico, Pico x CoCo x Chico, Pico to Chico, Yodel no Onna, Evil or Live Recap, Condom Battler Gorou
Edit: It seems AniList mods are just as short sighted as MAL mods, so I've found a new home at Anime-Planet for the time being.
I've recently migrated my entire list from MAL to AniList and Anime-Planet. That's as simple as exporting the list and importing it on these sites, but how can we be sure that all the shows have been moved over and none dropped? How does the experience compare?
If you'd like to know, I counted all the shows for each rating I gave between the sites, and then went through and matched them up when the counts differed. It turned out that these other sites are remarkably complete, and only dropped several shows compared to MAL. Specifically, out of the 700+ anime on my list, AniList dropped a couple recap episode specials, a commercial like Condom Battler Gorou, and an independent short Yodel no Onna. I thought Yodel no Onna was hilarious, but none of these 4 are really deal breakers. On Anime-Planet's side, the only thing that was dropped was the Boku no Pico series -- who knows why... They have other hentai like Kite, but not my Pico. Anime-Planet does combine the seasons of some of the donghua series like Douluo Dalu, which I find preferable, since there isn't any distinction between these "seasons" that MAL keeps anywhere in the OP and title screens of these donghua, and there are barely any mentions in marketing material.
There are a couple annoyances. Neither AniList nor Anime-Planet have numbering in the list, so it's hard to track how many of a category there are at a glance. They needed to be counted. Anime-Planet does have a very helpful import progress feature that tell you what's been successfully added and dropped. With AniList, I had to hand count a number of them. Also, in AniList, sometimes the sequels of an anime are given different names. For example, Dou Po Cang Qiong is listed as "Fight Break Sphere" in the main series, but the specials are listed as "Doupo Cang Qiong", or the first season of Dou Luo Da Lu is listed as "Soul Land", and the second season as "Douluo Dalu". This inconsistency is annoying and I'm going to see if there's a fix.
AniList also allows me to vote with higher granularity out of 100 instead of 10 (and I could display it with 10 + decimals). Both sides allow this with reviews, although for the list Anime-Planet is only in half star increments up to 5 stars, which is equivalent to a 10 point system. It remains to be seen whether the mods of these sites would be as offensive as on MAL. Anime-Planet does allow me to make my reviews semi-private, accessible only through my profile. That helps me track my thoughts and keeps trolls away. Anime-Planet doesn't display review scores until you click into the review, which is a bit annoying.
So far, the only thing I'll miss from MAL are the easy-to-access list filters, and perhaps the condensed view of the list. Practically everything else is better from the competitors.
