daemonblade1229's Blog

October 9th, 2009
Hm. I didn't realize there was a blog feature here. I'll have to make use of it the next time I have an anime rant and no one to spew to.

For now, I'll just through out a few random observations and claims that I believe and will argue.

-The Japanese are infatuated with the part of a romance before and leading up to the confession of love. Though this has been less strong in the late 2000's, I would argue that the vast majority of romance series prior to the last couple of years ended at confessions, or shortly after.

-The Harem subgenre has, in the last decade, made strides towards become a valid, reasonable genre instead of a waste of time. I largely attribute this to a move away from the useless, weak male character, and a move towards adding other matters of complexity to this. Series that I believe are exemplary of this are Shakugan no Shana, Shugo Chara, and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.

-On the whole, animation quality is getting better on the whole. I believe this is at least in part due to the fact that we have more and more series that have multiple 12 episode seasons and their 'sequals' instead of 26 episode series. Spice and Wolf is a wonderful example. The other reason is most likely advance in computer technology that help and supplement help the hand drawn style.

-Fantastic shonen series (in fact, I'd be willing to argue most genres) are better when, like Naruto and bleach, construct subcreated worlds that have both depth AND breadth. That is, in a world like Naruto you have a lot of space and character to deal with. Because of these series lengths, they can be handled well. This, i think, is why they are so popular: you get drawn into the world, so even if you think a particular arc of the story is dumb, you stay for the rest.

-There are several excellent series that should be bought, brought back, and finished off story wise. Foremost amongst all of these are 12 Kingdoms and HunterxHunter. By far two of the best series ever. Their open ends are tragedies to the anime world. Of course if they were finished, it'd have to be done well. Other series are Flame of Recca, and even Claymore, though you have to pull a Record of Lodos War and redact the end of the series, then start up and bring it back to the animation and story quality of the show's first arcs.

That's all for now. Just a few of the things I've picked up on that have been percolating. I could find more examples for my assertions if challenged, these are just off the top of my head.

Sincerely,
daemonblade
