Anime Relations: Choujikuu Seiki Orguss

  • There was a lot of characters, yet none of them but the main ones, such as Kei, Mimsy, Mome, etc. got developed even decently. There was some development, but I would have preferred these side characters be given less screen time so more time could be given to developing the main ones. I deeply question why characters like Lieea, Maaie, and Jabby had to be written in the story.
  • I personally found the design choices in the anime to be ugly and pointless. The clothes of Kei and the Emaan looked goofy, the helmets used when piloting the mechas didn't look good nor have a purpose in being designed that way, and the mechas flew around awkwardly with their legs out the vast majority of the time. The Emaan have weird tentacles coming out of their hair for no apparent reason other than to have a physical trait that separates them from humans. In my opinion, design choices don't even have to look good if there is a purpose in them being designed that way. However, none of the designs here have any purpose.
  • Jabby is Jar Jar Binks.
  • I thought Kei and Mimsy's relationship developed fairly well, even if Mimsy is a basic and boring character on her own.
  • Kei's development wasn't as gradual as I would have liked, and mostly all happened near the end. It didn't feel shoved into the end or anything, but spreading the development out more would have made the first half of the show less of a drag.
  • Mome turns out to be an actual good character. She deserved more screen time.
  • The animation and art is terrible by early 80s standards. My biggest complaint regrading it would have to be the facial expressions. More often than it should have happened, a character would be angry or sad, yet his/her facial expression said otherwise and looked smug or happy. It's like the animators would just default to a basic smiling face if they didn't remember the context or emotion of the scene.
