Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
The greatest anime ever made. Nuff said.

Angel Beats...
...really needs to stop sucking. These final four episodes are -seriously- going to make or break this series.

Ugh...
From this point forward, my relationship with Code Geass R2 is a love/hate one. Seriously, its awesome one moment, and pretty annoying the next. I realize that season one was also a trainwreck, but it was the good kind of trainwreck. R2, not quite so much.

Ya know, its bloody amazing...
(Please note: the following are MY opinions.)
Whats amazing you ask? How 10-20+ old anime manages to hold up with todays stuff. Now granted, the animation isn't exactly up to date (lets be honest here, its downright archiac in some shows now), but the solid story telling, wonderful characterzations and smooth flow overall more than make up for it. Now in my opinion, a lot of recent anime is only substandard at best. I look to older anime and -looking past their animation- I absolutely great works. Great works that in some cases even deserve modernizied remakes. Works that stand the test of time.
I finished Armored Trooper VOTOMs (1983) yesterday, in addition to rewatching Macross (minus the Robotech desicration) and following Hokuto no Ken. I won't sugar coat anything here -the animation in these shows are absolutely horrible compared to todays works. The characters and story telling on the other hand are vice versa. It amazes me to see all these newer animes with their fancy high-budget animation fall flat on their faces with weak characters, weak story flows, and over use of fanservice.
I'm not saying ALL modern anime are like this, heavens no! Every now and then comes a very nice gem that I'll gladly praise (Macross F and TTGL come to mind). I'm also not saying that all 80's and 90's shows are good either. Believe me, some BAD ones got produced in those times. I just feel that a good chunk of anime these days is weak compared to what we got in the past thats all. For me, older works are better done than the most recent stuff, especially of the last two years or so.
