- If looking for recs...
- sub-category: magical girl. 3 distinctions: witch, warrior, idol. Young girls with superhuman ability both aiding and hindering their lives.
They traditionally have transformation sequences and a mascot character. - sub-category: identity crisis. Somewhere in this work, or perhaps a large part of this work, there's conflict within oneself about motives and behavior. Usually asks the existential question, "Who am I? Why am I the way I am?"
- sub-category: secret identity. "No one must know who I really am!" or "We have to keep it a secret that X is really Y because reasons Z."
Usually abundant in mystery and magical girl. - sub-category: digital world. Portion of story takes place inside a confined digital space with specific rules, such as mmorpg or a computer-like world.
- sub-category: age switch. Reverting to a child-like state of mind or the body turns into an older or younger person.

Categories
- BL / Yuri — (respectively) male & female homoerotic content that focus on romantic relationships.
Fantasy — things like high fantasy with weird abilities + monsters, imaginary worlds, mythology.
Geicomi — literally "gay comics" (ゲイコミ) features mxm relationships with muscular/macho design
Gender Commentary — author uses themes revolved around gender to influence the work. Largely includes main characters or side characters associated with: transgender, genderqueer, nonbinary, intersex, crossdressing, gender transformations, gender nonconformity, sex change, etc.
Historical — takes place in the past or has traditional elements.
Psychological — the narrative has a focus on the mind of its characters and wants to unravel larger than life concepts, usually by asking questions.
SF — science fiction. Stories based around concepts or hypothetical situations that require the use of science.
(technological advancements, futuristic settings, aliens)
SPN — supernatural. What can't be explained by the mundane or logic / reasoning. Things like reincarnation, ghosts, angels / demons, the afterlife, curses, etc.
Tournament — features a winner-take-all setting through competition. For the sake of simplicity, this is largely my tag for sports and game, with scattered shōnen or action titles if they have tournament arcs.
Tragic — irretrievable loss is found here. Elements of death, great sorrow, or misfortune. Usually with unresolved feelings. Isn't always high tragedy with death of the hero (symbolic) but can be susceptible to melodrama and sensationalism (violence, madness, hate, lust).
