Anime Relations: Orange
January 26, 2024

Ano Natsu (Those Summer Days) was a ride. Still not sure how I feel about it, so I am writing about it. There will be spoilers... you have been warned.

This story was like an evil Orange. Not the fruit but the manga, Orange. Both stories have time travel, high schoolers, and a dead/basically dead friend that they wanna change the course of time to fix it. There's also a love triangle among the main heroine and the dead/almost dead character and his BFF.

Why do I say evil? Orange was more positive and upbeat - sure there was death on their minds (to prevent or to do, depending on the character) but everyone wanted to save that guy and stop him. Everyone had good intentions and the ending was happy and made sense.

This story, Ano Natsu - when they time travelled, so did the almost dead guy, Taru. However, he became evilish after being in a coma and hearing all their secret confessions of lies. At first they all wanted to save him. Then it got more unhinged and they didn't really want him around anymore (not dead, just he was really becoming evilish). That probably makes no sense, but my words are failing me. Taru became aggressive towards Tamaki, the main heroine, because he wanted to win her over his BFF. This led to forcing her into unhappy situations by guilt-tripping her into it.

In the end SPOILER, I thought Tamaki should've died to settle everything, and that they'd stop time travelling back to those days. This would resolve the intense and hostile love triangle among her, Taru, and Takumi. She couldn't choose one, and I thought her indecisiveness would continue to cause problems. So, if she died, they'd be sad and stuff but Taru's and Takumi's friendship could've been rebuilt, and the other selfish desires from the other friends would fall to the wayside. This series was dark anyways, so I thought a dark ending would be suitable. However, she ended up suddenly becoming decisive (which is great! Decisive women who can vocalize what they want is a good thing!). What made that bad was because it felt out of place for Tamaki. Then she and Takumi got married in the future! And they all lived happily ever after. Like what?? I don't feel like this is a "happily-ever-after" kind of series. Not that I can change it.

Anyhow... that's my take on it all. Maybe I'll come back to re-explain or reevaluate it, but not right now. Thanks!
