KyoAni has been my favorite studio for awhile now. And you nailed everything they do right in this article. When ever someone asks me what is some of the best animation in anime, I always end up talking about "The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya". With the show being at a rather slow pace, the story is compelling, but what really draws in the viewer is attention to detail of the characters and their actions, as you mentioned, that draws you emotionally invested for Kyon and his dilemma, as well as build a gloomy atmosphere in contrast to the first 15 minutes of the show.

"Hibike! Euphonium" was a treat at providing wonderful atmosphere and detail to the characters emotions. Since you already talked about it, I want to highlight another show that I haven't seen mentioned yet. (Note, I wrote this for a ANN article about KyoAni >>>link to article http://tinyurl.com/ha4s6bp) "Tamako Love Story". To be honest I am not a fan of "Tamako Market" at all really, but the movie was something else to behold. It was even more simplistic than the series, but the way the animation and direction was handled created a charming gem that drew it's viewer in just as much as the previous shows I mentioned. Here's an example of what made "Tamako Love Story" stand out so much more than it's respective series.

I had to remove the audio, PONYCAN blocked the vid only in the U.S. #RIP (also just did away with the subtitles as well) a bit of spoiler here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQV7U2F-gAk&feature=youtu.be

This scene does so many small but wonderful things in a short amount of time. First thing you recognize is the beautiful landscape and the way the sunset creates a nice glisten across the creek. It's subtle but there's also a bit of movement within the frame itself, as if it's being recorded by a very steady hand from the shore. Upon coming to the point of view of Mochizou, there is a brief second that Tamako moves out and back into focus as well as the same frame movement. As if again, a camcorder is being used to film the scene first hand. This is relevant to to Mochizou's hobby and the fact that he wants to study film making, which is the focus on the conflict at hand, going away to Tokyo to an arts school and leaving Tamako behind. We are then given a similar scene to the first, (this is where the nice music comes in to make the scene so charming) the background is out of focus bringing your attention to the pair, yet is still detailed enough to be noticed. Tamako sends of a nice little smile as she starts to talk about why she likes Mochi, as she reminisce about her mother in her thoughts. (her words describing mochi is a metaphor for how she feels about her mother) As the first memory passes, we come back to Tamako, no doubt with that same look on her face, but the frame is focused away from her mouth. Although she's thinking of happy memories, without the smile it's clear that there is also a bit of sorrow in her eyes. (water is still flowing and refection present out of focus, nice hair movement) The memories are nicely styled as if being shot by an 8mm camera, where they throw in a nice little frame jump that is relevant later in the story. A nice breeze flow through that creates a moment of silence, beauty, and tension ( spoiler[tension at least for Mochizou, that much is evident from his facial expressions as he works up the courage to confess to Tamako]). Then much of the same distance shots where they focus solely on the character. Until Tamako struggles to keep her balance, you'll notice that the somewhat surreal atmosphere created by the focus of the scene is absent. It then creates a bit of tension with the absence of music and framing only their lower bodies. The moment we see Mochizou squeeze Tamako's arm, we are aware what is about to happen, for Tamako it's the same (although she's unsure of what exactly), the expression on her face shows that she realizes something is up. As Mochizou speaks, the glisten in Tamako's eyes give off a sense of bewilderment by the sudden decision of Mochizou. The scene then creates a decent amount of suspense by not allowing us to see their faces until Mochizou drops the bomb. The absence of his eyes and body language is able to show how intense this moment is for him. It's easy to see the shock then embarrassment on Tamako's face as they nicely break the suspense in comedic fashion to help transition the scene.

I may have went over board with the description here, but I've seen the film a handful of times, so I began to notice all these little details that happen so fast, they aren't really noticed the first time. Yet they appeal to your subconscious. That makes a series more enjoyable the second and even third time you watch them. KyoAni are masters of making the viewer emotionally invested into the scenario before you even realize it. The brilliance shown during this charming little film was seemingly absent from the TV series.

Was gonna do all time films but.... on contray to what the weebs like to say.... "Anime" is not an

exclusive genre or whatever you want to call it. And is always mixed with "Cartoons".... because

they are the same shit! And American animation trumps Japanese animation for a majortiy of their

films. Just watch anything from:

Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle)
Mamoru Hosoda (Wolf Children, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time)
Katsuhiro Ohtomo (Steamboy, Akira)
Satoshi Kon (Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers)
Makoto Shinkai (5 Centimeters Per Second, Garden of Words)
Yoshiura Yasuhiro (Time of Eve, Patema Inverted)

Here's what I gathered so far from the movies, I have to go through the entire yearly box office

gross numbers to pick out the anime. Most of the shows are Pokemon, Dectetive Conan, and

Doraemon. Excluding these and TV adaptations to compiling a "good" list of anime films will be a

pain.

2015 (unofficial, just the numbers I can find)
Bakemono no Ko
Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno
Doraemon: Nobita no Space Heroes
Dragonball Z Fukkatsu no F
Love Live! The School Idol Movie

2014
Frozen (suck a dick, it out-grossed everything (including live action) by FAR!)
Stand by Me Doraemon
Doraemon Shin Nobita No Daimakyo

Pokémon the Movie: Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction
Crayon Shin-Chan

I think alot of people don't get what it means to be impressed. It can be literally a couple minutes of smooth animation. A good line of dialogue that makes you think, same with just the concept or idea of the show. etc. etc. It really takes only a moment to be impressed with that particular content. I've watched quite a handful of things this year that impressed me for various reasons. From shows that weren't even that good. Like Typhoon Noruda. wasn't very good but had great animation technique.

Maria the Virgin Witch was a refreshing story set in the 14th century, it delved into religious corruption of the time, good combat animation, good art design, amazing soundtrack, and even the dub was really good with it's acting.

Hibike! Euphonium was beautifully animated and directed. It had a well paced and interesting story with likable characters (story=/=plot. inb4 cute girls doing cute things, it's not really). And the soundtrack was phenomenal. It took music from a lot of classical composers like Antonín Dvořák, Jacques Offenbach, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and had an original piece by Akito Matsuda called Crescent Moon Dance that was great.

The Case of Hana & Alice was a good show of what Rotoscoping is capable of with excellent fuildity of it's characters and being able to use real facial expressions to... well express the characters feeling/thoughts., The voice acting was pretty good and backdrops were very pleasant.

Akatsuki no Yona was another refreshing take on the classic set up it had. What made it stand out is Yona's character development, you thought she was naive, you began to feel sympathy for her, then she toughened up and the viewer grew respect and even admiration for her (i did anyway). Many shows fail at developing characters as good as they did her.

Aki no Kanade was well animated and for a 30 min it's story was inspiring.

Parasyte was well animated, a interesting story, well paced, love the soundtrack.

Death Parade had good art, did a good job of telling an overarching story even though it seemed episodic at first to a lot of people. They through in lots of subtle development that I think a lot of people missed. They did a good job of keeping suspense throughout the episodes with each individual story.

Houkago no Pleiades impressed me with how randomly complicated and plot twisty it became. It also was like magic school bus informative about planets. It was fun. Had a good bitter sweet romance that was the highlight of the show.

The Little Witch Academia: The Enchanted Parade. The animation and sound was just as great as the original. The story was cute as well.

There's lots of things I can pick out that I didn't like about each. But for the most part, they were some really good shows.

Quality is subjective, people have different tastes. I rate anime by how much I enjoyed it. Granted if you don't like Rom/Com then you are probably not gonna like my ratings.

4 is Bad. Show is terribly predictable, story is not intriguing, and characters are too cliche to stand out and are forgettable. Will not watch again or dropped.

5 is Average. Even though they are predictable and characters are cliche, the story seems interesting enough to see what happens next. These are show I may continue to watch, but only once.

6 is Fine. Same apply with all anime, you can see the cliche and usually predict the next plot advancement, but there is something that makes it stand out, whether it be a certain character, the story premise, animation, and/or music. From hear on out, these score can be weighted by Action, Comedy, and/or Emotion.

7 is Good. Stories that are interesting and concepts that are unique. These shows also have some good characters and atmosphere. Some Shonen may be missing key elements of character development or plot points, none the less they are enjoyable. Some Rom/Com that are funny but may not be the most emotional, exciting, or romantic. << standard when looking for new anime too watch.

8 is Very Good. Stories/Concepts that are intriguing, clever, unique, and feel complete. Most characters are very likable and/or have a character you like to hate, either way they are well portrayed, relatable, and therefore tend to care about them. Anime at this level tend to have a good soundtrack that add life to the situation. Solid character development and story progression. Again could be weighted on intense Action, clever Comedy, and/or deep Emotion.

9 is Great. Something in my eyes that truly is a unique aspect compared to other shows I have seen. Characters are blooming with personality/passion. The story is cleverly captivating. Concepts are unique. Music is fantastic. A show that is quite entertaining a majority of the time viewing. Events that genuinely makes me feel happy, sad, excited, angry, and/or anxious.

10 is Masterpiece. Does everything right to bring you the most enjoyable experience you can have watching an anime. Probably a biased scroe based on nostalgia or something....

The original broadcast of "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya" (only 14 episodes) in 2006 was released in what is known as "Kyon's Order". The episodes did not follow their chronological timeline. The order as is follows plus 1 plus 5, because reasons. In 2009 all episodes were broadcast in order 1-28.

Order they are broadcast with their Chronological episode # /Title
Ep25: The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00
Ep1: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part One
Ep2: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part Two
Ep7: The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya
Ep3: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part Three
Ep10: Remote Island Syndrome (Part One)
Ep9: Mystérique Sign
Ep11: Remote Island Syndrome (Part Two)
Ep8: Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody (Personal Recommendation not included in the original broadcast)
Ep28: Someday in the Rain
Ep4: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part Four
Ep27: The Day of Sagittarius
Ep20-24. The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya1-5 (Another Personal Addition not broadcast)
Ep26: Live Alive
Ep5: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part Five
Ep6: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part Six
Ep12-19: The Endless Eight. Or at least episodes 12,14,15,19.
Movie: The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

So much anime, so little time. Because of the unusual writing of the story, it's possible to shortcut the series and still get the full effect of the main plotline. Chronological Order.

Ep 1-6: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 1-6
Ep 8: Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody
Ep9: Mysterique Sign
Ep 27: The Day of Sagittarius (has some Yuki development, also just a fun ep)
Eps 12, 14 or 15, and 19 of The Endless Eight, 12 and 19 are a must, and at least one in between.
Movie: The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

Regardless of how you watch it. Enjoy!
