Lupin III Part 2 Episode 35: The Riddle of Tsukikage Castle
Anime Relations:
Lupin III: Part II
Sub vs. Dub
I am really happy that I have enough Japanese under my belt that the main mystery and plot point of this episode didn’t go over my head. But still, for the average American viewer, and myself the dub is recommended. It does a bit of backtracking and explains what the clues mean in Japanese so it’s an appreciated touch. The struggle with translating something you need to have so much context and knowledge of the language can be very difficult. However, this dub doesn't change too much but still has it makes sense. This is why I think shows like Detective Conan partially stopped getting dubbed. A show like that requires you to know a lot about Japanese culture and language and while it does get explained in the end, the main goal and enjoyment is to follow along and try to decipher it yourself. In this episode, all the information is presented and if you don't know how to play on words with Japanese numbers, you're out of luck. Not to mention there are a billion different ways to say numbers as well. It's important to have knowledge of some kanji as well. Being able to separate the different radicals and what they mean when separate. It's complicated so the fact the dub makes it really easy to follow along is a true accomplishment! Outside of just the translations, there were some great jokes. I really love Pioneer’s version of Goemon, he’s so sarcastic all his lines are great. Especially the “I just told you, it’s a sword.” line. Also, Goemon yelling while he’s falling is so stupid sounding.
Story
Goemon is after a sword hidden in the Tsukikage Castle but so is the Fuma Ninja clan. They attack the guys and Jigen gets attacked irritating his eyes. While Jigen is recovering, Lupin searches for clues as to where the treasure could be, but can’t seem to figure it out. There’s a tapestry with a cryptic riddle and a grandfather clock frozen on 8:29:42. Fujiko takes Jigen out of the room but comes back shortly after saying that the Fuma Clan took Jigen hostage and the only way to get him back is to present the location of the treasure to them. Lupin rushes to figure it out and meets up with Fuma the next morning. He provides them with the hints which lead to the fish statue atop the castle and figure it's the left one. Lupin gave them false information however and while they make off with the left statue Lupin and Goemon open the right statue filled with gold and the sword.
More of a Goemon-centric episode even though the whole gang is involved. I love me a mystery and that's just what I got. As I mentioned, it's something akin to Detective Conan so I tried my best to figure out what all the hints meant.
Characters
I particularly liked Lupin and Goemon's dynamic in this episode. Goemon had all these little snide remarks he kept saying and I love the little moments of sass he can have. Especially when Lupin is trying his hardest to figure out the riddle and Goemon's just telling him to work faster. Sarcastic remarks after sarcastic remarks are exchanged. Couple of things on Jigen, bro really must have been sick because he trusted Fujiko to take him somewhere alone. Also love the one scene he shares with Pops. Truly exemplifying the troll in him with the cigarette. Zenigata's interactions with the other guys are rare but it's nice to see him share his love of hating them with them other than just Lupin.
Art/Animation
He's carrying Jigen 😭 it's so cute aaaaah I love JigLup!!
He so silly here. The devilish grin will never get old.
Music
More of a traditional sound, which is fitting. Dealing with ancient treasures, ninjas, and just Goemon in general, the old traditional music really adds to the different mood of this episode.
