Now that the fall 2020 anime season has ended, I want to record some of my thoughts. I'm going to try to do this for future seasons as well.

  • Overall, this season has disappointed me. The Day I Became a God in particular; I was hoping it would be a lot better/more enjoyable than it was. I didn't enjoy half the series I watched, and none of the ones I did enjoy blew me away.
  • I noticed and enjoyed a fair amount of the music this season, which is surprising. The Higurashi and Tonikaku Kawaii openings really stood out. Same with the Yashahime ending. Jujutsu Kaisen's opening is really overrated; even seemingly to point where it overshadowed the ending (which is pretty good).
  • Tonikaku Kawaii almost impressed me. It did something new and refreshing, while avoiding a lot of the common rom-com tropes (which I think are terrible and ruin most of the shows in this genre). Unfortunately, the series started to stagnate after episode 7. It ended on a relatively high note, but the latter half of the series brought the overall quality down.
  • I'm surprised Talentless Nana ended up being as popular as it is. Despite that, I thought it was just ok. Nana's strategy is incredibly contrived, and the show is way too predictable to be a good thriller. I enjoyed the last four episodes, but was bored for the first nine.
  • Jujutsu Kaisen and Higurashi are the only shows I really enjoyed watching.
  • Even though I don't think it's a particularly good show, I mildly enjoyed watching Assault Lily: Bouquet. I think if it had gone for a continuous-narrative approach and included more action, it could have been good. The quality of the action scenes was surprisingly high for a show of mediocre caliber.
  • Adachi and Shimamura is forgettable. I didn't have any expectations going in, but I was surprised at how bad it was. It reminds me of some of the stories I've seen written by machine-learning algorithms. The characters don't display convincing human behavior. Much of what they do and say is bizarre. The plot/world is shallow and surreal. Maybe part of this is due to poor translations and/or script-writing, but regardless, I didn't enjoy any of it.
