Hair
Mai has blonde hair. Looks sorta brown but is most definitely blonde. Because busty blondes are surely not overused. She does have purple highlights though. However the main problem comes from the horrible hairstyle, since with few exceptions sidetails are ugly and my least favorite hairstyle. Think that she does get shown with her hair down, but not enough to mitigate the huge issues such terrible hair causes. Pity about that.

Eyes
Mai has purple eyes. The shape is a nice tsurime too, though maybe she overdoes it with the eyelashes. Not bad for a generic KyoAni derpface character.

Mai sucks here big time. First off she has height, and with 168cm she outdoes all the other girls at that easily. Not the men though. Too bad her rude tsundere personality isn’t benefitted from being tall and thus this is rather useless. And talking about useless things let’s talk about her disgusting breasts. This is easily the main issue Mai has for the show focuses on her breasts way too much because the only thing that matters is useless tumors. For starters all the other main girls are pretty modest, horrible specials notwithstanding, which makes Mai stand out the bad way especially since the series for some reason makes her the main heroine. That means the series comes as the fat cow triumphing over all these flat useless annoyances. Furthermore she gets way too much horrible fanservice involving these useless bags of gross flab, with the worst being EASILY the limbo scene. Long short story the first episode had the evil spirits make the heroes play limbo, and while anyone sane and with actual working brain neurons would make Reina the flat beauty perform best here since she lacks useless annoyances instead she performs like crap and Mai saves the day by bouncing her nasty ugly horrible disgusting tumors up and down and passing when they are down enough. Was really stupid and made the series look like a freaking joke, with many rightfully deriding the show for this nauseating moronic scene. The worst part is that additional data only makes things worse, like mentioning her breasts are over 90cm when other measurements are ignored and mentioning she grew early and apparently first used a bra during 5th grade which is just plain gross. Not sure why there are so many chest excessive focus girls and none with asses, but it’s unfair and sucks. And thus this awful mamocentric girl scores like crap. Not that her legs and such are bad, and oddly she has a mole on her left thigh, but the mamocentrism is bad enough it overshadows everything. Not even being randomly gifted cat ears and tail saves the girl.

Mai shows ass. Amusingly the very same first episode from before had her wear a red buruma and have some ass moments which gave her a brief ass fame. Sadly then she went on to never show ass ever again and thus look like they were just teasing ass fans, which in certain ways is worse than not having any ass period. She does score better than nothing, but still below average. That one nice official pic helps though.

Mai does okay here. She defaults to school uniform with yellow sweater over black shirt for a slightly original yet still dull choice. She does have that buruma but again she only wears that once and otherwise has a dumb miniskirt. She has some variety with yukata and bikini and some cosplays, but nothing too outstanding. The problem comes when official art aside from the aforementioned awesome buruma pic loads her with dumb cleavage and chest images for mamocentric costumes are never good. Hardly the worst case of this but still not great.

Personality
Mai had potential. She was meant to be this cool older girl that fights phantoms and doesn’t get afraid from anything. And sometimes she does showcase that. Really that is her entire story because the anime ignored the actual novel plot since KyoAni does this all the time. Faithful studio in your wildest dreams only.
The problem is when not fighting. Since sadly KyoAni hates doing new things Mai ended as this boring tsundere with little dere that constantly berates the male lead for dumb things and otherwise acts okay but not great. Considering the lead’s knowledge and summons save Mai’s bacon many times you would think she’d eventually catch on this but nope, jerk all the way. Shame about wasting what could have been so damn cool.

Mai does badly here. Not only she hogs the fanservice big time but she also hogs the fanart hard, and it’s mostly horribly mamocentric for more fail. That said Western fans are somewhat more logical and like the beautiful Reina about as much which helps somewhat, but still not cool. Also while silly Mai has the same first name and almost the same last name as another FAR better badass senpai from another KyoAni show and that just annoys me big time.

Mai fails here too. She gets paired with Haruhiko the main guy but they’re always bickering and being an awful couple. Especially since this show is from 2016 and by then such couples were basically considered old hat if not outright tiresome. There’s also the episode where he becomes a shota but that only hurts the pairing further for implies straight shota must be mamocentric garbage only and frankly the fetish has enough issues already. Also the bonus beach episode is dumb and we don’t like talking about that.
