What is Yu Yu Hakusho's ethical complexity!?
Anime Relations:
Yuu☆Yuu☆Hakusho
The Yuu Yuu Hakusho series is considered a classic, mainly for the complexity it brought to its genre. It was a pioneer on presenting ethically dubious characters, both protagonists and antagonists, along the genre conventions it displays. The series isn't particularly sutil about it, yet not many people seem to fail when trying to recognize said traits. Throughout the Dark Tournament, Urameshi Yusuke faces the struggle to become stronger to defeat his enemies. Master Genkai questions if Yusuke would be willing to take her life away for power. After a long reflection, Yusuke finds himself unable to pursue in such drastic acts. Genkai responds that she would teach him her ultimate technique, since he was neither villainous enough to desire killing her, nor innocent enough not to consider it.
Younger Toguro was the main antagonist throughout the Dark Tournament arc. He gave away his humanity for power to accomplish his revenge. Toguro himself later kills Genkai, showing off his ruthlessness and his acquired power. At the end of his life Toguro is filled with regret for his life and past deeds, he dies with a desire to be punished.
Shinobu Sensui was the main antagonist throughout the Chapter Black arc. He viewed the world in black and white, seeing demons as evil and humans as good. After witnessing some of humanities darkest deeds became psychologically twisted. After that, he was mentally broken and conflicted by alternate personalities and his general ideology turned around.
Urameshi Yusuke is the series protagonist all throughout. Despite being moral for the most part, Yusuke's actions are often somewhat questionable. His desire to protect others is almost as big as his passion for fighting, which enfatizes this concept. In the end of the series he has accomplished every goal of his and is able to live a happy life. This doesn't exempt him from going through hardships, but he is likely to overcome any new adversities in the future, as he did in the past.
