Right before they pulled the curtains on Book of Circus, we got to see Ciel laughing hysterically. Or rather cynically? Indeed, it did appear more pained one at that. A forced laughter. What a way to end! He couldn't even cry properly because of his butler's presence.
Even though he asked for their deaths, he couldn't help but feel sorry for them. For he can relate to them. He is in a similar situation after all.
The story of the circus troupe paralleled with that of Ciel's. They both suffered in their childhood, rescued by despicable people, felt obliged to do something that they otherwise wouldn't do if they had the luxury. The troupe was used and deceived by Kelvin till they met their bitter end while Ciel himself is being manipulated by Sebastian. And forever doomed to be his meal. In a way, Ciel is still trapped in a cage.
One can't help but breakdown after realizing this. Although Ciel tried to mask it with his creepy laughter, somehow I think Sebastian understood that Ciel was in fact feeling down.
