The Curious Case of Tamako Market
Anime Relations:
Tamako Market
I adored this show. Frankly, the large number of average reviews was quite overwhelming and turned me away from watching. I am not one to heed critic or user reviews, opting instead to decide for myself whether or not a show is interesting. But, in this case, it was quite overwhelming indeed. I decided to just bite the bullet and form my own opinion. I'm glad I did.
Firstly, this is a KyoAni show. You know what to expect when you start this series, and that's cute girls doing cute things. I came in to this show with an open mind, pushing aside all the average (or bad) things I read. In the end, it was a rewarding experience for me. I watched it in almost one sitting.
All I got from this show was exactly what I thought I would: large amounts of moe. Is that such a problem?
The entirety of this series held my interest and kept me thoroughly entertained. It was light-hearted, fun, and most of all: cute. That's all I could have asked for.
Looking at it from a critical standpoint, yes, there were many flaws. The characters were largely generic, the overarching plot was paper thin, and nothing about it felt like it had a lot of substance to it. Critically, yes, I would rate this show perhaps a 5/10. However, I think that's the wrong way to judge it.
The main reason I watch anime is to be entertained. And this show succeeded. The voice actors were all very good (I particularly liked Kanna and Choi). The animation was crisp and fluid, as always with KyoAni. The OP and ED were both very catchy, I found that I didn't skip them a single time. Most of all, it was the overall light heartedness and cute characters that kept me watching.
I gave it a 9/10, because that's how much I enjoyed it. It's time to stop being so cynical, and to start embracing the things we enjoy, no matter how mindless. Life is more fun that way.
