Anime Relations: Air, Kanon (2006), Clannad, Clannad: After Story
こんにちわみんなさん

I have no idea where I got the idea to call Kanon, Air, and Clannad the "Key Trilogy" but I refer to them as such whenever I discuss the three of them at the same time. Perhaps it has to do with the fact that all three of them are visual novels with the same premise made by the same company and their anime adaptations were all done by the same company as well. One guy meets a bunch of girls and he helps them out with their problems. When you watch the three of these anime, you can see the similarities in the story-telling and especially the characters.

The stories all deal with what I mentioned above, mostly normal every day life. But all of them contain supernatural elements that throw a loop in the events that happen. It keeps the stories interesting since not everything is as they seem. Just when you think you have a handle on the situation, some supernatural part comes along to throw things off.

The characters are when you can see the clear relation between these three. A lot of the girls share the same traits and personality as each other. I can list off a few examples:
Ayu Tsukimiya (Kanon) + Michiru (Air) + Fuko Ibuki (Clannad) = Antagonistic towards the main characters and the butt of the main characters' jokes. They're often teased for being really odd. They have a couple more similarities but those are spoiler realted...
Shiori Misaka (Kanon) + Misuzu Kamio (Air) + Nagisa Furukawa (Clannad) = These three are all physically frail and have mysterious illnesses that can't be cured. Of course, the main character in all three of these anime spend a lot of time worrying about these girls. But all three of them are strong-willed and are willing to do their best despite their illnesses.
Mai Kawasumi (Kanon) + Kano Kirishima (Air) + Kotomi Ichinose (Clannad) = These three have really traumatic pasts that have caused them to be recluses. Kano not so much but it's definetely the case for Mai and Kotomi. Reflecting on their pasts is extremely painful for them and they often react in hysterical ways.
Sayuri Kurata (Kanon) + Minagi Tohno (Air) + Tomoyo Sakagami (Clannad) = All of them have troubling sibling pasts that have permanently changed them. How they dealt with their situations was different but the overall premise is the same.

I enjoyed all three of these anime. Even though all three of them had confusing endings, I enjoyed them all the way through. Clannad: After Story is the best anime I've seen so far and Kanon is also one of my favourites right now. As for what's next for me... my order of Chobits and Hidamari Sketch STILL hasn't arrived yet. I ordered it in December! The only reason why I'm not complaining more is because it was a big group order. So I must stick to online stuff for now. So I think next will be OreImo. It seems like something I would like and the second season starts in a couple of weeks. And... I still need to finish Angelic Layer. The show isn't too interesting but I'll try to get it done.
